Early Contender,

This review is from: In the Dark (Audio CD)
With the release of In The Dark, these guys have knocked out high quality discs back-to-back. Not sure which I like best, but 2008's Mission Control was very good as well. I agree with one of the other reviewers that claimed this is an early contender for "Disc of the Year in 2010". While Black Lotus is a personal fave tune for me, the disc is solid front to back, and The Whigs are fast becoming one of my top bands of the day. Not into over thinking what makes a good album, and despite owning close to a thousand albums/discs, I haven't issued one of these reviews online before, but was disappointed to see only two reviews (albeit both 5 stars!) to-date for this offering, which deserves high praise. The Whigs are creating consistently melodic stuff that rocks pretty hard, and will almost surely get two thumbs up if you dig Spoon, Japandroids, The Kooks, Death Cab and Arctic Monkeys to name a few.

From top to bottom this album is strong. The bands these guys open for have not put material out that can compare to the majesty that "In the Dark" has on it. Hundred/Million opens with thumping bass drums, while the title track repeats an unbelievably catchy chant of the chorus. There's nothing to hate all to love, this IS THE TOP ALBUM THUS FAR IN 2010 for alternative rock. From how things have been in the music industry it may as well stay there by year-end. I'm not going to list out how I rate each one of these songs and what they mean to me, but it is clear each song was crafted with care and meaning - the end result is better experienced then read by another.

This is a solid, rocking record but it definitely does not have as many memorable hooks as its predecessor Mission Control. Too much of it sounds to me like rock by the numbers, and the production sounds overly slick this time out. I've listened to it a few times now and no songs really stand out. That said, it IS an enjoyable listen compared to most of what's out there.

cool, straight-up guitar indie rock with a punch,

Wow, well it looks like most of the people here like it, but all the "trendy" review sites are knocking this one, calling it "boring",
"dumb" & "uninspired". Well, they got it wrong again. I mean, it is just a rock album, but it's vibrant, gritty guitar post-grunge indie rock that churns up melodies & kicks them through a mega- blaster of hummable gut punching. With its heavy hooks and muscular riffs, this is powerful, fun stuff in its straightforward simplicity. Shades of Foo Fighters, Replacements, Kings Of Leon.... from Athens, Georgia.

Very Very Very Very good disc. Takes me back to another time when bands made good straight-ahead rock-out-with-your-clock-out music. This costs only $5 to d/l right now, July '10. You can't go wrong. D/L it and listen again and again and again. It's the Feel Good Hits of the summer mutha truckas!
