This third installment of the Unicorn Chronicles finds Cara’s father and two traveling companions seeking the Rainbow Prison to free Cara’s mother. Meanwhile, Cara and her beloved unicorns are awaiting the invasion of Luster by archenemy Beloved and her band of warriors. Cara tries to retrieve a long-forgotten story as danger and evil await her every turn. Music (Indian folk music when the setting is Delhi, and classical violin accompaniment in Luster, for example) heightens and complements the suspense and helps transition listeners. Subtle touches include one character’s voice fading into another’s. Author Coville, who serves as the main narrator, maintains a steady and consistent reading, and Becca Wemesfelder perfectly captures the tones and inflections of adolescent Cara. With the book containing plenty of backstory, this fast-paced audio works well for both new and old series fans. Grades 5-8. --Linda Sawyer
