Book Description

January 1, 2006
Herbert West; Reanimator, The most popular of all Lovecraft’s creations, Herbert West is a medical man obsessed with the notion of defeating death. In six short stories, he tells the story of West discovery of a reanimation formula, and of the terrible havoc he causes with it. The Horror at Red Hook In New York City, a terrible hunger stalks the streets of Brooklyn, stealing children, and working toward a mysterious goal too horrible to contemplate. Is the once highly respected Robert Suydam the power behind the madness, or merely another one of its victims. Only Thomas Malone, Lovecraft’s poet detective can unearth the truth and possibly save the great metropolis before its doom is sealed! The Outsider A highly emotional piece, this H.P. Lovecraft classic concerns a mysterious individual who awakens to find himself completely alone in a vast but incredibly ancient castle, one from which he never seems to have ventured. The story tells of his determination to free himself from his prison, to scale the highest tower of the castle, and of the hideous truth he discovers when he does so. The Statement of Randolph Carter An effective and moody tale, “The Statement of Randolph Carter” is told in the form of testimony given to the police. It’s a tale of attempted communication with the beyond gone horribly wrong. It also marks the first appearance of Carter and is part of Lovecraft's remarkable Dream Cycle as well. BONUS! This story is presented in AudioBooksPlus format complete with background ambience and sound FX. The third installment of "The Dark Worlds Of H. P. Lovecraft" is brought to life by the incomparable Wayne June in the 3 CD set. Produced and Directed by Fred Godsmark Artwork by Allen K

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovecraft + Wayne June = Chills!, November 28, 2010
This review is from: The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
I don't know what Mr. Elgin means by traditionalist, but I am capable of appreciating different types of prose. This work is some of the finest Post-Victorian horror and Lovecraft is still monstrously influential today, inspiring authors (Stephen King most notably), TV shows (recent South Park episode featured Cthulhu), movies (Reanimator, Hellboy, an endless list really), and video games (Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Quake, Penumbra, and much more). Wayne June as narrator is a perfect choice, his deep voice can unnerve and soothe when the narrative needs. He really drew me in.

3.0 out of 5 stars Written in a thick slow manner, November 7, 2010

This review is from: The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
This is the first work of Lovecraft I have encountered. I listened to this audio over a course of a few months. The language is so 19th century in style, it felt on par with Edgar Allen Poe. For myself, this is a tough proposition, its not enjoyable in my mind to wander through this dialog free poetry inspired prose. Every story seems to be told by a narrator telling a story of an event that occurred in the past.

I admire some of the ideas here. As someone who greatly enjoys horror fiction, I found several stories that I think would be excellent if retold by a decent contemporary author. You read this work, and it becomes a little awe inspiring in just how far fiction writing has come over the course of a century. While hard to read, its obvious that this was in its time very well done. I was finding it unbearable. If you take a sentence or two, the prose here is a lot of fun to dissect an ruminate upon. This is scholarly material, not for light enjoyment.

If your a traditionalist, you will love this collection. Im not and am struggling to give it 3 stars. Yawn.
