I have been a fan of Stream of Passion since before I was a fan of Nightwish or Epica, so they and Within Temptation were what I built my metal database off of in the past. I owned and repeatedly listened to Embrace the Storm probably more than any other album. There was just something different about this band's style; whether it was their slower, more moving melodies or the Latin influence on the music, I could not decide - but I liked it.

Four years later came Flame Within, which was a much heavier approach with less of what I loved on the first album, though I came to love this sophomore album from the moment of my first listen. I embraced the fact that they had decided to sound more heavy and mainstream to the female-fronted metal world, and I eagerly anticipated the release of Darker Days.

I did not get what I expected. Throughout my first listen, I was utterly stunned because this album appeared to revert back to what Stream of Passion established with Embrace the Storm and combined it with much heavier elements. To me, it sounded like Embrace the Storm and The Flame Within had been molded together and revamped to the point of perfection that is so much more unique than mainstream metal. This album is full of metal, as well as beautiful Latin influenced ballads, and simply bombastic music altogether. Not to mention Marcela Bovio's vocals are stunningly beautiful.

All in all, this album is a win for Stream of Passion, although quite a bit different than what one might expect from this band compared to The Flame Within. But it was a direction the band needed to go, and it is very much congratulated!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good album September 7, 2011

This album was extremely good! The songs are darker and is heavy. Some songs are written about the drug war problem in Mexico and about problems in other regions. All the albums from SoP have been unique and use different styles. This is definetly a 5/5 in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing band, even more amazing singer July 16, 2013

Fans of European metal-tinged rock will love this band. Created by Dutch wizard Arlen Lucassen and built around soprano Marcela Bovio, this band is moving on and building on the example he set for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal, Mixed with Mexican Magic.... September 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
IF YOU BUY THE ALBUM - I pre-ordered from Amazon UK and got the Digipack version with not to be missed bonus track (The Hunt) The only version of the CD now on sale here MIGHT turn out to be the standard version without the bonus track -if it does, The Hunt is now available as Download

IF YOU DOWNLOAD - Your media player will give Genre as POP (!!!)Do not panic, this does NOT mean you have downloaded by mistake one of the other "Darker Days "albums put out by other bands with no connection at all to SOP. .Its just a coding glitch. These things happen. Rest assured, "Darker Days" is every digit as metal as "Flame Within" -more so even . Heavier maybe, Darker certainly.

Like Flame within. Darker Days is an intense album of depth that that deserves and demands your undivided listening attention from start to finish : It wont settle for background .Above all ,no way ever try to DRIVE anything to this one !If anything ,it makes even more use than Flame of quirky time -signatures and abrupt tempo changes etc - so, maybe not quite the easiest of albums to get into on a first play, but one that very soon grows and stays.Very few vocalists if any other than Marcela could ever make this musical style work quite this brilliantly well . She has also added some Latin instruments like the Bandoneum plus folk elements to the mix. This marks a further progressive growth in the bands range of sound, but does not mean there has been any calculated dropping of or moving away from any earlier elements. Simply a quite natural, unforced evolution of style . As it should be .

The SOP website gives a really useful short no nonsense note on what inspired each of the songs- from Van Gogh to Arab Spring to a Mexican's take on Netherlands Winters- well worth looking up, along with Marcela's July 2011 Face Culture interview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darker Days are here, OMG... August 22, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a much better album than Flame Within. I don't find much similarity to the other two albums because of Marcela's cleaner and stronger vocal here and she stood up well with those piano backing. This is one of those album that will grow on you with each playing and I am sure it will be played many times.
