Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Wagner's being associated with Nazism has caused some misinterpretation of his attitude toward Jews. But as Katz asserts, "the known facts dating from Wagner's lifetime prove to be incriminating enough without burdening him in addition with the horrible deeds of Hitler." The author avoids seeking evidence of anti-Semitism in Wagner's music. Instead, he restricts himself to the composer's direct statements and other testimony, connecting the phases of Wagner's anti-Semitism with biographical data and with shifts in the Jews' public prosperity. The result is a careful, scholarly estimation of Wagner's place in the history of racism that should interest many readers. Robert W. Richart, Washington State Univ. Lib., Pullman
