Lush, graphic sex in Victorian England ignites the reader.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Darker Than Love (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
This historical romance-type setting for erotica, provides many lush and graphic sexual scenes. The woman-dominated-by-man theme may initially be uncomfortable to modern, sexually liberated women but the intense sensuality of the encounters soon surpasses one's reservations. It offers a total diversion from real life with the plot resolving in a satisfying, sensual manner that is ultimately respectful of Clarissa, the woman controlled by her lusty appetite.

This review is from: Darker Than Love (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
however I couldn't give it the full five stars since I felt it was somewhat lacking on the eroticism scale since I think the author tried to hard to push the envelope ... The story evolves with a stock beautifull virgin, Clarissa, who has been betrothed to the dark and sinister (whatelse) Lord Maldon. Clarissa's recently married father takes off on his honeymoon with his young new wife, Alice, leaving poor, and let me tell you, frustrated but smouldering virgin, Clarissa behind, waiting to meet her, arranged marriage, husband .... The worldly Lord Maldon, who, by the way, owns several houses of ill-repute arrives in London early to do a tatse test of his upcoming nuptials .... the fact that Clarissa has fallen in love with a young Italian artist forces Maldon to kidnapp our happless virgin and put her through the paces .... Those readers that enjoy 'willing rapist' and some mild B&D will certainly rate the book at the 5 star maximum....

When I read the synopsis of this book, I thought this would be scandalous, but instead I was bored. The book doesn't get interesting until the heroine in the book finally gets kidnapped by the villian--her fiance-- (and that is around 100 pages into the book). The sex scenes are dull before there meeting.
Now as for the characters. I couldn't understand why Clarissa fell in love with Gabriel and vice-versa. They didn't have much interaction before proclaiming how much they loved each other and it just seemed unbelievable. I could have believed her fallen in love with Maldron, because of their sexual connection. I didn't like Maldron, however, because he was so one dimensional where you couldn't see any redeeming qualities in him. He wasn't tender to Clarissa at all, so I couldn't understand why she even succummed to him. I thought perhaps Clarissa would have been that one person he finally cared for (but maybe the author wanted to show there are just evil, depraved people in the world who can't be saved) Hmm. I then couldn't believe Clarissa to be this submissive woman who enjoyed humilation and rough sex. There was no inclinations from her character to have me believe she had such sexual desires. I thought this book was going to be so good. The title, the setting was great. This book would have been less perdictable if Clarissa fell in love with Maldron, her sexual soul mate, and found she could love him despite there rough start, but for this to happen Maldron would have had to have some redeeming qualities. A great book is "The Captivation". Conflicting characters where you can see the heroine staying with her captive.
