Book Description

Craig Lockman...

No one had called him that in fifteen years.

Not since his days at the Agency. Not since he was trained to kill creatures that were supposed to exist only in nightmares.

Yet the teenage girl on his doorstep not only knows his real name, she claims she's his daughter.

Before Lockman can learn how the girl found him, he's attacked by a black-ops team of assassins. But these aren't ordinary killers--they're heavily armed vampires sent by his most hated enemy.

Forced on the run, Lockman protects his daughter from an onslaught of horrors while searching for who betrayed him and why. The investigation leads him to Detroit, where he unwittingly sets a plan into motion that could trigger a paranormal apocalypse and cost him his soul.

Darker Things presents a new breed of urban fantasy, paced like a thriller and filled with gritty action. "Imagine if James Patterson wrote about vampires." -- Will Entrekin, author of The Prodigal Hour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad supernatural thriller February 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fairly good rainy afternoon diversion if you like the genre. Nothing heavy but if you enjoy television programs in such as Grimm and Being Human, you'll probably enjoy this for what it is. The relationship between the protagonist and the teenage daughter he has only recently learned he fathered is a welcome twist to the usual hard boiled, I've seen things that would drive most men and women nuts, worldview of the emotionally gaunt anti-heroes who typically inhabit similar fictional worlds. I would have liked more back story concerning both the mysterious agency that formerly employed the main character.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranormal Fantasy Served Piping Hot March 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Rob Cornell introduces us to the world of Craig Lockman. A world inhabited by vampires (non-sparkly, definitely not warm and fuzzy), werewolves (you won't be feeling sorry for these four-footed killers), ogres (whom I have a feeling would make great side-kicks), ghosts (ain't no friendly ghosts here), and the sleaziest of humans. Throw in a secret, paranormal-battling government agency that put Lockman out to pasture years before and you've got all the makings of a shadowy world.

Lockman's got a daughter he never knew existed. When she hunts down her birth father, it sets in motion a chain of events that threatens the very fabric of our world. In a journey to return his daughter, Jessie, to a safe, normal life with her mother, Kate, they will be way-laid by bad guys of the human and non-human persuasion.

There's a secret hidden in the brain of Craig Lockman, one that an evil man from his past, and all manner of paranormal being are hot to unlock. A secret that could destroy the world as we know it.

With well drawn characters, snappy dialog, thrills, chills, and enough twists to keep you guessing to the end, this book is one you won't put down until you've read the last page.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost 5 stars July 10, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was prepared to give this 5 stars until I reached about 3/4 of the way through. That is when the story started to become contradicting. I will try not to spoil the story but you can't state in one paragraph how a supernatural can be killed and then have them shot center mass 3 x just to have them get up to attack again. A dead body cannot be considered a sacrifice (that is the whole point behind SACRIFICE). One other point I would like to make is that I find it very irritating when characters are not made to learn from their mistakes, to continually be captured and released or escape just to be captured again is irritating (and boring). I also hate it when all of the good guys are killed and the only one left standing is 'the Hero'. That being said I am going to continue on to the second book because one thing the author did do was make you care about Lockman. I have read some of the reviews for the second and have higher hopes for the series as it develops.

Darker Things is a wonderful read, well written and planned out. The storyline is gripping and exciting, and the characters were believable and honest without being too dramatic or false. Can't wait to read more in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid supernatural story.. December 4, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Exciting para supernatural read that is fast paced and interesting. The main character Lockman is suddenly confronted with a child he never knew he had and now someone is using that same child to try and get to him. I enjoyed the read, although the last chapter or so it seemed as if the ideas were piling on top of each other to reach a super climax, which it didn't need because the story was solid as it was. The only things that caught my attention that I think may rattle one or two sensitive cages was the reference to the well known dictators murder technique, which I thought was borderline risque and I think some readers may find it offensive as it glorifys the idea as a good one. The other thing I found unnecessary was a comment made by the ghost about how women feel when in a certain state of arousal. It didn't have anything to do with the storyline. Aside from that I recommend both the story and the writer. I received a free copy of this book for my review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural Beings Meet their Match July 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a really funny and satisfying book. Craig Lockman gets drawn into a complicated and evil plot by the arrival on his doorstep of his long-lost 13-year-old daughter. He had been ready to bury the past, but the past comes and finds him.

Unfortunately for him, evil supernatural creatures have followed the girl to his doorstep. The bullets start flying before she is even through the door. While running from these creatures and killing them in gloriously brain-splattering fashion, father and daughter have the chance to get to know each other. He has to return his daughter to her frantic mother on the other side of the country, but they have a hell of a time just getting there.

One of the best qualities of Darker Things is the dialogue between this adolescent girl and her Dad. Cornell does a masterful job at developing these characters even as they fight for their lives and struggle to understand what they're up against.

The ending is hugely satisfying. I am looking forward to reading another book in the Lockman Chronicles.

3.0 out of 5 stars good book
But too many times the hero escaped death while many around him died. The reason for this is in the book but it's not enough for a 4. JMHO, of course.
