5.0 out of 5 stars The Specialists of Metal
You should know that this band IS very good at what they do, but they are Death Metal MINIMALISTS. They are not reinventing themselves every song - or album. If you want tech-prog metal, try Meshuggah. If you want solos, go back to Maiden (or Yngwie - see the Attack! album for perhaps the most obscene solo of all). For epic Black Metal production, go to Rotting Christ...

I respect Mortician as a band, because they have been putting out strong, pure death metal albums for as long as I can remember, but listening to a Mortician album has become such a mundane and boring exercise that it is no longer a joy to hear. For epic Black Metal production, go to Rotting Christ. Mortician is one band that really SHOULD be called brutal, for their laser focused attack (similar to Immortal). True, their formula is extra limited, but it makes me smile to hear it. Don't come to Mortician for pretty melodies, overdubs, fancy production, reverb, back-up vocals, showy drumming... you get the idea. The vocals deserve mention too: possibly the most hilariously bass-y monster vox of all, you can just make out what he's saying - if you have the lyrics in front of you. Somehow it works. And the sound is actually not too hard on the ears, because they are heavily bass-oriented. When you take it all into consideration, you'll have to say - hail Mortician!

4.0 out of 5 stars Darkest Day Of Horror, August 25, 2003

Although Mortician usually sound pretty much the same on every recording it's not neccesarily a bad thing. I was rather baffled to hear that Mortician is "noise" from a reviewer. hmmm well I do listen to my share of Merzbow and Mortician isn't noise. Mortician definetly has riffs. oh yeah and just because it isn't technical or melodic or whatever doesn't mean it's bad. Hey the Rolling Stones never made any technical songs, or melodic songs. they still rock. and since when can you decipher any notes from Disgorge Mexico's guitars? Disgorge mexico is a lot more "noisy" than Mortician. and I wouldn't say Devourment is THAT brutal. They are sorta weak. Anyways this is just another Mortician album...your best bet is to buy Chainsaw Dismemberment if you like this band. Plus how could you not love that bass tone!?

5.0 out of 5 stars A lil history..., August 15, 2004
This review is from: Darkest Day of Horror (Audio CD)
... I dont want to be any of those brainless people who post things like"this is realy heavy, dude!" and i want to sound actullie smart so read this. Mortician was founded in 1989 Will Rahmer (bass/vocals) and Matt sicher(drums) under the name casket. The band named their first song mortician and, soon after, decided to use the ominous title as their own, in december 1989 for promotional purposes and in february of 1990 the songs were re-recorded for the band's first demo. John Mcentee of incantation played guitar on the recording and remained a member of mortician throughout most of the 90's, a time period that coin with Will singing for incantation. The cult demo was later released by Seraphic decay records under the title, brutally mutilated.

In january 1991, Roger J. Beaujard joined mortician, replacing Mcentee as permanent guitarist. Mortician began playing shows all around the north eastern u.s., generating a huge buzz within the metal community and catching the attention of the newly formed relapse records. Mortician's debut for relapse was the now-legendart mortal massacre 7"/cd ep.Mortician continued to play shows and festivals while preparing to record their first full-length cd. At this point in the band's history, they were forced to make a critical decision.Drummer Matt sicher relieved of his duties as a drummer due to personal reasons...That's when mortician began using drum machines and whatnot.Well, i hope you guys learned about this amazing band a little but as for their 8th album "darkest day of horror" is without a doubt mortician so don't let it pass up for true fans or gore music out there! I recommend.

I respect Mortician as a band, because they have been putting out strong, pure death metal albums for as long as I can remember, but listening to a Mortician album has become such a mundane and boring exercise that it is no longer a joy to hear. O.K., we get it, you play really heavy and you can gutterally scream very low, but you have been playing the same dam n song for almost a decade! 'House by the Cemetery' was classic, but come on, try a new direction or something. Or maybe try to play something that sounds a tad different. But by the title I am not imply Mortician go the melodic route, or anything of that nature, I would just like to get something more out of their music (but just don't lose the samples). I would get into more detail, but it seems very unnecessary. The reason why this recieved 3 stars is because I am a fan of Mortician. We all know their style. Listen, if you love Mortician pick this up, but if not, pick up any of there releases. They all sound the same anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars What is this, really?, July 12, 2003
This review is from: Darkest Day of Horror (Audio CD)
This is unbelievably terrible. I think Mortician is the most low-brow, stereotypical band I have ever heard. Honestly, what good are they? They aren't technical, melodic, or even really brutal. The movie samples are so cliched and cheesy that I cringe when I hear them. And the "music?" Making a bunch of noise with detuned guitars and a drum machine does not good music make, and it certainly isn't brutal at all. Some degree of talent is required to make metal, you know. I know, I know, you think "Stupid guy, he probably listens to Iron Maiden and thinks they're hardcore" or "He must like nu-metal." I love Iron Maiden, despise nu-metal, and guess what? I listen to Disgorge (both the U.S. and the Mexican ones), Deeds of Flesh, Brodequin, Circle of Dead Children, Devourment, and plenty of other REALLY brutal death metal bands. Haven't heard of them? That's because they're underground (you won't find them at Best Buy like Mortician) and FAR too brutal for mainstream death fans. Go and check out those bands for REAL brutality, they make Mortician sound like pop music. This "band" disappoints me, what with Relapse having some of the best bands in extreme music (Nile, Dying Fetus, Exhumed, Nasum, Dillinger Escape Plan, Origin, etc.). What were they thinking? Anyway, this album is terrible, and not worth your time or money.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Darkest Day of Horror", November 1, 2007
This review is from: Darkest Day of Horror (Audio CD)
I find an element of dark humor in the title of this record. "Darkest Day of Horror." Just saying it out loud is humorous. Are these guys serious? I don't know anything about this band, but I can't take them completely seriously. I hope I'm not supposed to.

This is Mortician: 2 guys who chug absolute sludge to a drum machine they have programmed to play death metal blast beats very fastly, and horror movie clips (that are too lengthy in my opinion) to "kick off" some of the songs, and vocals that are so low they kind of blend in with the sludge. Inside the cover, one of the band members chose to wear a black t-shirt with the Star Wars logo emblazened across the front.

I like the fact that these guys have no scruples about using a drum machine, and I happen to like their sound, so occasionally I like to have a listen.

I have always liked this band ever since I listened to house by the cemetary.People always complain that this band is not very technical or that they are not very talented. This band has never claimed to be very skilled musicians but have only promised to be unrelentlesly brutal.I just love that detuned sound in this album and it has very memorable songs. The movie samples are great just like they always are and the songs are very fast. They may not be the most talented death band but they sure are one of the most brutal and heavy of all bands.GO OUT AND BUY THIS!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars DARKEST DAY OF METAL!!!!, September 23, 2003
This review is from: Darkest Day of Horror (Audio CD)
This is absolutely incredible! This is the only mortician i have so far, but is awesome! Every song is brutal, gorey, and unbelievable fast drum programing. And the cover art by Wes Benscoter rules. The horror movie clips are another plus too. Everything about it rules. And they even slow things down a bit the Ghost House, its awesome to. And they also have longer songs than usual. This is awesome. The standouts are: Audra, Slowly Eaten, Vodoo Curse, Massacred, Mangled(awesome riff), Dead And Buried, Darkest Day Of Horror, Rampage, Ghost House, and Pledge Night Of Death. This is an awesome gory cd. But if you didnt like mortician before you wont like them now cause they never change their style. HAIL MORTICIAN

1.0 out of 5 stars Darkest Day of Horror *cough*, July 8, 2003
By
Buzz N' Frog (Shelbyville, KY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Darkest Day of Horror (Audio CD)
"Darkest Day of Horror" is another horrible offering from one of the worst bands ever. I'm not talking about Limp Bizkit! I'm talking about Mortician. Here are the things that make this album just as horrible as their last one. The first thing that makes this album horrible is that the bass and drum machine are to loud. It is hard to hear Roger's guitar playing in some of the songs not that it matters any way, because all he does is play on the same frets in every song, but in different tempos and sometimes different tunings. The second thing that makes this album horrible is Will's bass playing. Just like Roger Will plays the same frets in every song, but in different tunings and tempos. Don't be tricked into buying this album, because it is horrible and I wouldn't even consider it music. Mortician have a brilliant use of horror samples, but horrible music if you can even call it that.
