5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever !
Darklands is pure genious - from the first note of the opening track to the very last sound of 'About You'. This is one of the albums I could not live without. While 'Psycho Candy' was a fantastic debut, 'Darklands' just blew me away. 'April Skies' and 'Happy when it rains' were two grandiose singles, released prior to 'Darklands', and there is not a bad song on this...

3.0 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) a departure from Psychocandy
In their first album "Psychocandy," brothers Jim and William Reid, the force behind JMC, experimented with sonics -- a buzzing chainsaw like sound, which was imitated by a myriad of latter-day bands (eg. My Bloody Valentine, Ride, The Raveonettes). The band basically cleaned up their sound with "Darklands," which is more-or-less a straight-forward melodic rock album,...

Darklands is pure genious - from the first note of the opening track to the very last sound of 'About You'. This is one of the albums I could not live without. While 'Psycho Candy' was a fantastic debut, 'Darklands' just blew me away. 'April Skies' and 'Happy when it rains' were two grandiose singles, released prior to 'Darklands', and there is not a bad song on this entire album. The first time I put this LP on my turntable was back in 1987 and I have listened to it at least once a month every year since then. Your CD collection will not be complete without this album !

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this album, November 25, 1999
This review is from: Darklands (Audio CD)
I honestly couldn't have gotten through the 80s and early 90s without this album. Haunting, beautiful, and true. "There's something warm about the rain/there's something good in everything." Coming from Oregon, it was my most played album. Living in Cali, it's the album I play to remind me of home and long walks in my trench coat with my sister: "we lived our lives in the pouring rain/and the raindrop beat out of time to our refrain." Surprisingly optimistic despite the sometimes funereal moan of the vocals. What can I say except buy it and make your own memories.

4.0 out of 5 stars No More Hissssssssssssssssssss...., June 7, 2001
This review is from: Darklands (Audio CD)
Back when The Jesus & Mary Chain released their debut album "Psychocandy," curiosity got the better of me and I went to check out the band when they played a gig at a [club], located in one of Detroit's worst neighborhoods. The brothers Reid, accompanied only by a drum machine and their guitars, played a half hour of what sounded like feedback amplified through a fast food restaurant's drive-through speaker system in a wind tunnel, with an occasional hook or melody coming through the din, never turning to face the audience once. So imagine my surprise, and delight, when, a few years later, I bought "Darklands," slapped it on my turntable and heard some of the darkest, melodic, most beautiful noise ever committed to vinyl. Songs like "Happy When It Rains" and "April Skies," in a perfect world, would have been huge radio hits. The album that showed the world what is at the core of the J&MC's music when stripped of all the feedback, distortion, and white noise. Simply stunning...

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent chilled out chain, August 26, 2008
This review is from: Darklands (Audio CD)
definitely the most mellow of the j&m chain albums, and certainly worthwhile. if you want the feedback, get psychocandy or barbed wire kisses, but just as often, i turn to this album. it's like the inbetween for the craziness, say, the soberish album. this what you would want your tuesday to be like, if you were hammered on monday and wednesday.

5.0 out of 5 stars 80's Music Nut, January 29, 2000
By A Customer

If you never heard of these guys or of this album, give them a shot. Personally, I think this album is their quintessential album. I remember listening to them constantly during the late eighties. The song "Darklands" should rank up their as one of the great depressing songs of all time. Up their with Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" or The Cure's "Kyoto's Song". Admittedly it was depressing but I could not stop listening to it. I lost the CD and had to have it in my collection.

If I could only own five CDs, this would definitely be one of them. I've been listening to Darklands for fifteen years and still enjoy it frequently. Your collection is imcomplete without it.

A lot lighter than Psychocandy, this second album was a great change of pace. Jesus and Mary Chain are cult heroes for several reasons, and Darklands is one of them.
