Editorial Reviews

Limited two CD edition includes a bonus four track CD. 2010 release from the Grammy-nominated British Extreme Metal outfit. Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa is their ninth studio album and one of their fastest and most brutal yet. Cradle Of Filth have been pioneers of extreme music since their debut in 1994. Never shy to embrace the epic, they have constantly sought to push the boundaries of their art. Unafraid of ruffling a few feathers, the band have continually refused to bow to convention or to conform to prevalent trends and fads. Yet despite this uncompromising stance, the band are still the most successful British Heavy Metal band since Iron Maiden, with legions of fans around the globe. Cradle of Filth continue to shock, excite, disgust and inspire in equal measures.

"Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa" is awesome in so many ways! I've been a Cradle fan for a long time now, and I would say that "Venus Aversa" is one of their best albums since "Midian". Forget the albums "Nymphetamine" and "Thornography" if you didn't like them, (like many reviews that I've read have stated), because this album continues in the same awesome vein as "Godspeed On the Devil's Thunder", only it's even better. What stood out the most to me on this album is that it is Cradle's heaviest and fastest effort in a long time. The band has always been heavy and fast, but this album is completely blistering from beginning to end, with an unbelievable assault of percussion from Martin Škaroupka, extremely punishing and versatile vocals from Dani Filth, and plenty of heavy riffing and solos from Paul Allender and James McIlroy on guitars. That's not to say that there is no melody whatsoever on this record, because there are some very creepy and melodic moments (such as "The Persecution Song", "Lilith Immaculate" and "Forgive Me Father {I Have Sinned}" ), but "Venus Aversa" is predominantly a brutal black metal record. Of course there are some of Cradle's traditional and haunting female vocals, performed by Lucy Atkins this go-round, with Ashley Ellyllon on backing vocals. Ellyllon also plays the chilling keyboards on the album. Notably, this album is the first Cradle album that doesn't have any instrumentals. Many of the songs are 6-7 minutes long. Every song is a relentless metal epic (with perhaps the exception of "Forgive Me Father {I Have Sinned}", which is different from the rest of the album; the track is a bit lighter musically, sounding like something that you might have heard on "Damnation and a Day", sort of like the song "Mannequin".Read more ›

I'm not a huge fan of this "genre" I guess you would say.But I have noticed one thing about the fans of this band. Most give bad reviews because of how much they liked their early work.So they rate the newer stuff terribly.Opinion are opinons I guess. So here's mine.I like the whole vibe of this album.I like the sound, the artwork, everything. If you listen to the samples and you like it a little...You wont be disappointed.

We've all been somewhat nervous about Cradle for a while now. Nymphetamine and Thornography were enjoyable but really subpar for Cradle. Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder was a nice save, and is actually one of my favorite albums, but many found it wanting. Then came this album, Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa. It seems everyone's giving it five stars (or one, which probably come from the people who don't like Cradle anyway; one either likes Cradle or loathes them, with no middle ground.) I agree with the sentiment: this album is very good. It brings back a certain gothic mood and... dark prettiness in the midst of the heaviness that I think Godspeed didn't quite have in the same way. I think any Cradle fan should at least like it.

But I wouldn't give it five stars. The best of Cradle's concept albums, like Cruelty and the Beast or Midian or (I would argue) Godspeed, immersed the listener far more in the story. This, I couldn't even make out the story for many listens, and now that I'm reasonably sure what's going on, it's still got holes in it that niggle at me. The best of the atmospheric works made you feel you were there, amid the monsters, beholding the dark fairytales as they unfolded around you. This is... about Lilith. And she's sexy. And a demon. And the music is cool. It's fun, it's interesting, it's engaging -- but I feel engaged with, not transported.

And the older stuff was twistedly erotic and darkly naughty. The lyrics pushed the envelope and then shredded it with feminine claws stained with blood and more intimate substances. This harks back to those days in a way Godspeed didn't, but it's less inspired on that score.

Best Cradle album in a long time, even though I like all of them. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort into "Venus Aversa". And it's really heavy! Can't wait to see them on tour!
