5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than I'd Hoped, September 17, 2009

This review is from: The Darkness Volume 1 Compendium (Hardcover)
After recently purchasing and reading through both Witchblade Compendiums (Volumes 1 and 2), I ordered The Darkness Compendium, never having read this series before, my interest peaked from reading through Witchblade. I am glad to say now, after recently having read it, that it is certainly on-par with Witchblade, which is my favorite graphic novel/comic book series of all time. The rivalry between the Darkness and the Angelus, with the malevolent Sonatine in the mix, is a pleasure to read through, having beautiful artwork depicting these epic battles between "good" and "evil" and dialogue that is highly engrossing, though it does falter from time to time with spelling/grammar errors and inconsistencies. Add in the fact that my version of the book is hardcover--which is *really* sweet--and what you have (or what you could have) is a book that will likely be among the most coveted in your collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strong Art Poor Story, March 12, 2010

Eh, rather mediocre and disjointed. I was really disappointed upon reading the Darkness after seeing other people's reviews. It sounded like it would be a good read but I was personally never engrossed. The stories are extremely disjointed and as other people have mentioned there's chunks of the story simply missing which ruins the already weak story telling. Couple that with the fact that Jackie never seems to do anything and everything is done to him the story flows more like, "Ok, who else can we throw at Jackie that might possibly challenge him". There is no personal development and you don't care for the characters until the very very end when things start to pick up, but then the compendium switches to stand alone tales. It's hard to care for characters as shallowly presented as those in the Darkness. Seriously, for most of The Darkness Jackie's only two thoughts are "Who can I kill next who hasn't tried to kill me" and "Why can't i have sex?" with the occasional "I miss my childhood friend Jenny but alas we can never be together because she doensn't like me killing people". Those thoughts over and over again. The art is good though and if a decently interesting story is of no importance to you then I would recommend this compendium. The hardcover binding is solid and the book does indeed have a nice heft to it.
