Book Description

“Heart of Darkness” is a novel by Joseph Conrad (1857-1924). It was first published in 1899.

The story takes place in Congo, at the end of XIX century. It narrates the story of Marlow, a British sailor who went to Congo to work for a commercial company. He is assigned to travel up the river, in the interior land, towards a far station of the company, managed with wild methods by a man who made himself worshipped by a tribe of savages…

The novella has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including a famous Francis Ford Coppola's retelling: the movie Apocalypse Now.

The ebook also contains “A Personal Record”, an autobiographical text written by Conrad in 1912.

Editorial Reviews

Review

As powerful a condemnation of imperialism as has ever been written Observer Once experienced, it is hard to let Heart of Darkness go. A masterpiece of surprise, of expression and psychological nuance, of fury at colonial expansion and of how men make the least of life ... endlessly readable and worthy of rereading Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars Something to read at the same time. August 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Read "King Leopold's Ghost" at the same time. Conrad 's representation was the real experience of the native Congo population at the turn of the 19th century. "Despicable" doesn't begin to describe it. Take a look at "Soldier Blue" and "Apocalypse Now"; two films that refer to events in history, Show horrific abuse and violence, but don't come close to how bad it really was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and exciting October 30, 2013
By Anne
Format:Kindle Edition
When I learned Apocalypse Now was based on this story, l put Heart of Darkness on my list of classics to read. The verbiage is antique and flowery, which befits the time and takes the reader into that world of exploration and mystery when adventurous men discovered riches at the center of the dark continent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart of Darkness September 13, 2013

Joseph Conrad's masterpiece of Kurt's soul is the endgame reality of human experience. Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot looked to Conrad as the holy grail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colonial Africa Uncovered August 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
To really appreciate this literary classic, you should first read the non-fiction "King Leopold's Ghost.........", to fully grasp the level of human rights abuse the Belgians inflicted on the people of the Congo.. King Leopold is representative of the damage that colonial European countries created in their exploitation of Africa, and the damage done still exists in this century. Africa has been exploited through slavery, mineral resources, and international manipulation. A must read to grasp an insight of how big a challenge Africa will continue to pose to the U.S. in the next 30 years.
