5.0 out of 5 stars As atmospheric as a dark night, September 10, 2005
By Ant (Tokyo Japan) - See all my reviews
This is one of my all time favorite albums. Very atmospheric but with a lot more `darkness' than your average New Age CD. In fact, despite it being often grouped into this category, it's only because it doesn't fit into any other category well. It's certainly not New Age but nor is it strictly traditional. It's not written to soothe but more to take you to parts of the mind rarely ventured to. It is eclectic in that each track could be from a certain part of Asia. The title track is very Japanese & `Zen' like, with dark, almost menacing Koto played amidst a subtle flurry of chimes. (Yas Kaz by the way is a renowned Japanese percussionist). Other tracks seem to take you to the jungles of Thailand, the beaches of Indonesia or onto the silk roads of China. His skill with percussion paints exotic soundscapes (Track 3, Jungle book, a jungle sound scene completely made up of his percussion instruments, no samples - quite amazing when you realize this) & the strings used on a number of tracks add a truly mesmerizing ambience you simply wouldn't get on a cheap New Age type album. This is definitely closer to Harold Budd than Kitaro in its seriousness to sonic exploration though in saying that, this is not like Harold Budd, more like Kitaro, but heavier & played with much more virtuosity. You won't be disappointed, unless of course you're looking for some soft sampled Shakuhachi to numb your mind with. You won't get that on this album. This is real music.
