4.0 out of 5 stars I think it's a pretty good book!
This was the first 'FR' book I read and I thought it was pretty good over all. It has a good cast of charactors and they are easy to like. If you are like me and did not read 'Pool of Radiance' first, then you still will be able to very easily follow this book when you read it. This book goes at a good pace. The fights are OK, I like how the characters are not always...

1.0 out of 5 stars Single worst book I have ever read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Single worst book I have ever read., October 19, 2009
This review is from: Pools of Darkness (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure) (Paperback)
I was always a big fan of the Forgotten Realms series, but thought the novelisation of Pool of Radiance(one of my alltime favourite games) was terrible.

This book goes beyond terrible.

The introduction has the supreme lord of evil blasting his minions with comicbook sound-effects *zzzzapppp!* *pow-eeeeww!* until one of his cohorts tells him, in what appears to be a Brooklyn accent, that he has to 'show them bums' (I'm not making this up) the extent of his true power. What follows is a collection of wretchedly concieved, poorly written cliches twisted into a vague semblence of a plot that is largely implausible even in a fantasy universe. I gave up reading the book after forcing myself to halfway.

Pure garbage.

The fights are OK, I like how the characters are not always put in a fight were it's always a hundred to one and they still some how amazingly come out on top with little more then a small bump on there heads. If you are new to fantasy or are an old pro and don't need to worry about every last detail of a book to enjoy it then I would say that this is a good book to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book for begginers., May 6, 1997

This review is from: Pools of Darkness (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure) (Paperback)
I have read many Forgotten Realms books and I rate this one as a little above average becauuse although it did not sell very well it is a good book for those people just beginning their descent into the Realms. In fact the whole trilogy was my first. Although the other books are diffuclt to understand this one is not. Fare thee well wherever thee fare.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better than book one, but still awful., July 5, 2011
This review is from: Pools of Darkness (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure) (Paperback)
It's better than part one, but that's not saying much as the first novel was beyond awful. Pools of darkness starts off just as bad as book one was, but picks up slightly to a level of mediocrity that's acceptable as long as you read in "auto pilot' mode. Unfortunately, it falls flat on its face again toward the end.

The characters are more interesting than in book one, but they're still as flat as cardboard. The story is poor as well and there are zero plot twists. If you'd like a glimpse of how badly this book is written, try to wrap your head around "prose" like this: "Few things scared Shal. After all the adventures and monsters she and Tarl had faced together, they both had nerves of steel that matched their tall, athletic bodies." If that isn't absolutely cheesy and horrible, then I don't know what is.

This Book was very entertaining. It was kind of beat up a little but what can you expect to get for 1 penny. The cost of delivery was a lot more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable, February 9, 2001
This review is from: Pools of Darkness (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure) (Paperback)
This was one of my earliest fantasy reads and I got through it faster than I had ever read a book! The first chapter is one of my favourite opening chapters of all time. Although I have'nt read the first book I found the characters in this one very likeable. Pools of darkness I think is a classic example of good traditional high fantasy. Read it if you have too much spare time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pool of Radiance was good, Pools of Darkness sucked, August 23, 1998
This review is from: Pools of Darkness (Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure) (Paperback)
while i loved pool of radiance (the first FR novel I read) pools of darkness was a big disappointment. The combat scenes are similar to, but much less interesting than Bob Salbatore's and the novel lacks an interesting plot. The entire city of Phlan is kidnapped and Ren has to go look for it.
