Review

“This is a story about damage and survival, about the past and the future, and about facing the truth behind the pain. I've never read a better mix of engrossing suspense that also slammed me with heartfelt and raw emotion.” —Jessica Park New York Times Bestselling author of Flat-Out-Love and Left Drowning

Andrew E. Kaufman: Author of Psychological Thrillers

Andrew is a broadcast journalist-turned-author, living in Southern California, along with his Labrador Retrievers and a very bossy Jack Russell Terrier who thinks she owns the place.

He was named one of the highest-grossing independent authors in the country when his total number of books sold pushed well past the six-figure mark. The Lion, the Lamb, the Hunted was on Amazon's Top 100 for more than one hundred days and went on to become a #1 international bestseller. His first novel, While the Savage Sleeps, made the Top 100 as well and was number one in its genre, passing up two of Stephen King's current releases at the time. His success resulted in an international, dual publishing deal with Thomas & Mercer and 47North.

Andrew is also a contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, where he's written about his battle against cancer and the subsequent struggle to become a recognized author.

After receiving his journalism and political science degrees at San Diego State University, he began his writing career as an Emmy-nominated writer/producer, working at the CBS affiliate in San Diego, and then in Los Angeles. For more than ten years, he produced special series and covered many nationally known cases, including the O.J. Simpson Trial.

A sharp but psychologically abused journalist tormented by the tragic loss of the love of his life; a prominent wealthy couple's disappearance under mysterious circumstances; a beautiful but damaged woman struggling to overcome her abusive past. Throw in some terror and destructive fires with a vengeful police detective and you have the dangerous and exciting recipe for the fantastic new thriller by Andrew E. Kaufman "Darkness & Shadows. All I can say is buckle up, you're in for a wild ride!
First a disclaimer: I am primarily only a reader of romance novels with the occasional paranormal as long as there are plenty of steamy love scenes to keep my attention. That being said, I was not prepared for how much I would become engrossed in this book and LOVE it despite it being out of my usual comfort zone. I literally did not put my kindle down for an entire day until I read the book from start to finish. This is the type of novel that BEGS to be made into a movie, the kind of action/mystery that makes you hold your breath until it is over. I found myself doing just that and trying to read faster to find out what happens next.
Kaufman has a real gift with words and he intersperses his mysterious murder mystery with Patrick's story of love lost from the past, the visits to his therapist who is trying to help him deal with his demons and move forward and a new surprising relationship with an unlikely partner.
Darkness & Shadows is the perfect combination of suspense, mystery, romance, action and some of the most well written and realistic conversations I have ever read between a therapist and patient. It has a natural flow that moves right along like a lazy river until it hits a fast moving whirlpool that sucks you down until you think you are drowning, only to be pulled up gasping for air. Amazing and just wow...it was a thrill to experience!

With his career on the rocks, talented reporter Patrick is in counseling, hoping to come to terms with memories of two women. The first is the mother who hated and abused him and the second is Marybeth, his first and only love, an exquisitely beautiful but volatile coed, who died in a fire. Or did she? When a wealthy, socially prominent couple disappears under suspicious circumstances, Patrick is convinced that the wife is his long lost love. Shaking off his ennui, Patrick is determined to uncover the truth. Partnering with an unlikely ally, Patrick risks all to find the woman who doesn't exist.

This is a riveting novel that moves at a good pace. Despite his gentle nature, Patrick is no whiney mama's boy. He has depth and develops along with the plot. I liked the dimension his pet dog added. However, the Von Willebrand disease angle was unnecessary and silly and the fire phobia was never fully explained. I enjoyed this novel. It was exciting, suspenseful and ultimately satisfying, Recommended.

Something simply eludes me about why I could not really connect with this book. After all, it has an interesting premise. Patrick Bannister’s life is falling apart - again. He’s lost his lucrative job writing for a magazine and the only genuine relationship he has is with his Rottweiler, Bullet. When he recognizes his true love on television - a woman who he witnessed die back in college - he throws all of his energy into uncovering the truth. Along the way, this broken man finally begins to heal and even connects with other people.

But the plot contains virtually no surprises. Yes, there is plenty of action, but the ultimate resolution is apparent within the first fifty pages of the novel. Perhaps it is the lack of underlying tension that drags the book’s pacing down, or makes it difficult to connect with the characters (well, other than Bullet - he is the most realistic character in the whole book. The dog’s fate and the strength of the relationship between man and dog are probably the only reasons I was able to finish this book). It isn’t a poorly written book, though, and if there were just a few surprises to the plot, I probably would have enjoyed it a whole lot more.

Andrew E. Kaufman, incredible author of the psychological thrillers, has written another blockbuster, Darkness & Shadows.

Emotionally damaged by a childhood filled with the abuse and indifference of his mother, Patrick Bannister is further devastated when the only woman he ever loved dies in a fire, as he watches on helplessly.

Plagued by loss and guilt, Patrick hits bottom when he loses his job as a crime reporter for News World, but the reporter in him refuses to quit. The question is...will Patrick survive after a deeper look into his past, his own mind and the murder of his dead girlfriend?

The intrigue kept me turning the pages. The suspense kept me from putting Darkness & Shadows down. The fast pace kept me on edge. The trail of evidence kept me guessing right to the end!

A great continuation of Patrick Bannister's story from The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted or as a stand-alone novel, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Andrew E. Kaufman provided another well-written novel that will keep his readers crying out for more!

Main character watches "the love of his life" (supposedly) burn to death. Yet, there was no funeral, no DNA evidence, etc. Then he hooks up with a scarred parolee who tells her tale (SPOILER) of being ganged raped by Mexicans and being staked out in a field. Oh, and a pack of wild dogs just happen to attack her but the dogs just lick her blood. PUHLEEZE..! This could not have been written by the same author who's other books were quite good. Plot reads like a teenage Ninja Turtle script.
