I'm a fan of the Darkness. True its a very style over substance type book, this isn't a series that was ever going to make you have deep thoughts on morality or spirituality. But what it lacked in depth it more then made up for in style.
Between the incredible art and how well this version was put together I'm very happy with the book overall. Unfortunately since its a compendium I was expecting the complete story line from the first series. And you do get the complete issues from series one, however they've left out three important arcs. Though since one contained Batman licensing likely stopped its inclusion. The others however are Top Cow's alone. The Darkness/Witchblade and Witchblade/Darkness crossovers tied directly into the series story line, thus you have two points as you read through this compendium where story arcs are broken. The first comes to a cliffhanger and then jsut stops, the second has you jumping in at the end of the action with only a very brief summary explaining what the hell jsut happened. Then of course the story jumps head in the next issues to several days or weeks after those events and leaving you with a massive plot hole and nothing but confusion. The Trade collections did contain these two arcs which made it a disappointment to see them missing in this massive tome. Since the other parts should be found in the Witchblade Compendiums you could always get them, but its disappointing that in order to get the complete first volumes story I have to pick up the book for a character that I'm less interested in.

Ultimate Darkness Collection,

This review is from: The Darkness 1 (Hardcover)
The Darkness is an excellent series. This book comprises of the entirety of Volume 1 issues 1-40. A very good deal for the 60$ especially if you dont have any other darkness comics, making it about 1.50 per issue.
The Darkness is about a mafia hit man Jackie Estacado who inherited the ancient power of the Darkness which allows him to do almost anything he wants under cover of darkness. The art is amazing in most issues of the Darkness. Garth Ennis writes the first 15 or so issues, and he is an excellent comic writer. i wish i owned this. because im still missing #19-#39 so its almost worth it for me to just get the individual comics at this point, but for someone who doesnt have that many yet its an excellent deal.

Finally the new edition of The Darkness Compenidum is avalible. I've been waiting for this for a long time, not knowing when it would turn up. But here it is. Go back to the beginning and get to know Jackie Estacado and the Darkness. Great fun and many hours worth of reading material. The artwork is amazing, and the hardcover feels really good. The only thing that makes this one not getting a five star review is the fact that I thought it would be oversized, just like The Absolute Sandman-books. That would have been awsome, and so point out the fact that this is not a 100% perfect edition, but what the heck, BUY IT !!!!

I purchased this compendium for my husband as a surprise. I pre-ordered it last year, but was unable to get it. I was messing around at work one day and saw it was available and I had to get it. I wanted it to be a surprise for Christmas, but didn't get my hopes up. Wouldn't you know it, it arrive Christmas Eve and I put it in his underwear drawer to surprise him! He was floored that I found it! I was impressed with how much bigger it was than what I thought it was going to be. This is a great compendium to have in my husband's collection!
