Evocative, Rich with Meaning, May 17, 2007
This review is from: Darkness Visible (Audio CD)
I found myself spontaneously flowing with Virginia Wagner's songs on Darkness Visible. "Carry Me Away" was with me for hours afterward - I think it's my favorite; so much feeling in her voice. I found that to be true of all of them. If I were to use one word to describe them it would be evocative. The lyrics in all the songs are rich with meaning. "The Same" is captivating, and I really like the guitar technique; it's probably my second favorite. I like "Stand Back" for it's subtle cadence and a powerful recurring punctuation with the the words "stand back". And I love the quality of her voice in "Time Can Stand Still" - it's angelic. A work of art.

No one else can sing the darkness so beautifully, December 24, 2010
This review is from: Darkness Visible (Audio CD)
I purchased both Virginia Wagner's CDs (Broken Hearted Angel and Darkness Visible) several years ago, and since that time they have never left my CD player. I will try listening to other music from time to time, but sooner than later I come back to hers and find that it is like coming home.
As with her previous album (Broken Hearted Angel), the songs on this album are beautifully written poems--you will find no covers here. Virginia Wagner's exquisite voice--accompanied by her flawless acoustic guitar and, on one track, Charlie Elgart's piano--lends itself perfectly to the poetry of her lyrics. The songs are finely balanced, with the instrumentation never overwhelming the vocals. Each one is a narrative poem that renders the darkness visible, or, to put it less poetically, sheds light on the darkness. What is revealed when the darkness is made visible is not always pretty, but neither is it always what one expects.
Despite the sometimes dark content of the lyrics, the music here is always beautiful--achingly so.
If you like beautiful music and exquisitely rendered poetry, you will like this CD. You may also want to check out her first album: Broken Hearted Angel. Rumor has it that a third is in the making. I can only hope that Virginia doesn't keep us waiting too long.
