Book Description

What happens when someone steals you? Do you develop in that darkness? Or do you simply break?
Shauna is stolen by Vengeance. Using torture, he breaks her, forcing her to reform and adapt. When he frees her, she flees. Thinking she's escaped her stalker and tormentor, she lets her guard down.

Then she meets Victor. Someone who seems sympathetic to her pain. Strong, loving, she learns to trust again by falling in love with this enigmatic neighbour.

But someone else watches.

Vengeance hasn't let go. She's living with him, loving him, trusting him, never doubting him.

In love, can she reform Victor, the way he reformed her?

Does the truth destroy Shauna, or will it set her free?

Editorial Reviews

Review

Darkroom is a visceral experience more than a read. However, I can see where people could get attached because this book is like a dose of Stockholm Syndrome. Vengeance gets not only into Shauna's head but the readers heads, too. If you let him. And what's more insidious is you don't know it unless you look for it, unless you're consciously aware of it. Nice writing, combined with unusual, strong, authoritative writing. ~ Kazza (Psychologist)

If you can stomach the harsh scenes, the tension, and the visceral reactions, you will be enthralled by this book. ~ Thriller author J.E. Taylor

"Poppet Author writes with a cinematic feel!" ~ Ron Knight

From the Author

This novel is the first in a series. It is followed by Satanarium and Over Exposure.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5/5 all the way! December 13, 2012

This book had me right from the start till the end. I could not put it down. Its dark, scary & will keep you on the edge of your seat. I have not felt this captivated by a book since reading the Hannibal Lecter...and I read a lot of books! At times I was saying out loud 'oh my god! Did that really happen?'. I now check my locks at night before I go to sleep, haha. Thank you for a fantastic book miss Poppet :)

I've been meaning to write up a review of this one for a little while, but to be honest I've been toying with my emotions on it. This book is incredibly dark, not dark like usual dark erotica that disturbs you a bit but you crack on with it all the same, ACTUALLY dark. Really dark. So dark it creeps inside your soul and leaves you tainted. I felt dirty and creeped out by this book, but it has soul. It's hard to convey in actual words (hence the delay in the review).

I can honestly say this is the only book I've ever read where I've genuinely hoped the heroine would commit suicide. Not just a bit either, I was there with my Kindle rooting for her. 'Please do it, end it, please!!! You have to get out of this!! Death is the best way!' but it got me like that. I'd think about it when I wasn't reading, and reading it was a compulsively twitchy, unpleasant but addictive kind of affair.

This book is executed with great style. It's very well written, it's got atmosphere pouring from it and it's dark as dark gets. If that's your bag you should read it, and you will love it. I loved it, but I'm not sure I would want to read it again. Not yet anyway, I'm still scrubbing it off my skin from the last time. Still, despite the horror and the mixed emotional response to this very original piece, it's got so much soul pouring from its spurting black heart that it's a 5* from me.

If you like dark then definitely give this one a read, just don't blame me if you're sleeping with the light on after!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! July 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a great read! Poppet has a way of making you fall in love with the villain yet again, which in my mind is very hard to accomplish. As the reader I feel very selfish for wanting MORE! This book was my sixth read from her. I couldn't put it down! To be quite frank, I wasn't a reader at all until I came across Poppet! Now, I'm hooked for life! She is able to capture every little detail and really makes you feel as if you're the main character! Put the tv remotes down and pick up a novel from Poppet! I promise you won't regret it!

If you are a squeemish person with delicate sensibilities this book is not for you.But if you enjoy a demented rollercoaster ride of the most twisted sort then this book is right up your alley.Right away this book throws you into the trenches of a dark and disturbed mind and with each page read you are psychologically gutted. It completely changes your perspective of what is right and what is wrong. Before you know it you are actually seeing things from Victor/Vengeance's point of view.To say the relationship between Victor and Shauna is complicated is a massive understatement. He treats her like clay to be molded into the image he thinks she should be and before she can even understand what is happening Shauna morphs into a person who is completely unlike who she thought she was.this book is a total mind screw of epic proportions and well worth the heart bursting experience.Once again Poppet has proved to be a literary sorceress who weaves her spell so brilliantly you are enthralled from start to finish.I pride myself on my ability to predict what happens next in books and am often right. But with Poppet's books, just as I think I know, I'm thrown for a loop that takes me in a completely different direction.I can't seem to stop saying this about Poppet but "she is indeed a master storyteller".

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark, disturbing, incredible read May 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Darkroom is an outright tale of horror, complete with a viciously sadistic (and religiously disturbed) villain. Victor believes himself to be an instrument of divine Vengeance, living for the torture and murder of women. Something about Shauna, however, calls to him. No longer content with dominating her physically through torture, he also craves the emotional dominance that comes with being her saviour . . . from himself. Here, rather than wanting to see ourselves in Shauna's place, it's much easier to sympathise with her - from a safe distance, of course.

Like Exploitsand Strike, Darkroom deals with power relationships, but in a different way. In Exploits, it was cruel and unhealthy, but still close enough to `normal' to seem realistic. In Strike, the obsession here goes both ways (creating an artificial sense of equality), and the supernatural element makes it seem so much more acceptable. In Darkroom, we're back to a one-sided relationship, but one that goes beyond cruel and unhealthy into sadistic and dangerous.

If you've yet to experience her unique style, her flair for language, and her psychological mastery, I urge you to give her a read. She'll challenge you as much as she entertains you, and she'll never make you feel safe within the story, but she'll ensure you come out the other side. Whether or not you come out unscathed, unchanged, is entirely up to you.
