Book Description

DARKSCOPE
a Ghost Story

“A frightening tale of lost souls, lost love, murder and deceit.”
---The Sierra Vista Herald

After Chelsea McCord’s marriage falls apart, her uncle talks her into a change of scene---Bisbee, Arizona, the scenic mining town with a notorious past. Her great-grandfather, mining magnate Lucas McCord, helped build Bisbee at the turn of the last century.

Chelsea discovers an ancient box camera in a dusty trunk, the film still inside. On a lark she photographs the town. Is it her imagination, or does the stench of death emanate from the camera’s inner workings?

And when Chelsea looks through a viewfinder wavy with age, she sees children in gunny-sack clothes, their eyes dark and grainy. Children from the 1920’s. She sees a young man and woman at a train station that no longer exists.

And as the past superimposes itself on the present, Chelsea learns the secret of her family’s true legacy. With one click of the shutter, she has unleashed a pure and hungry evil that will consume everyone she loves.

Now Chelsea must fight to save her beloved uncle---and herself.

“Skillfully blending elements of mystery, horror and a nice touch of irony, DARKSCOPE weaves a fascinating spell. 4 ½ stars."
---Frank A. Loporto, Rave Reviews

“Buy the book and send it to people you want to visit here. If they aren’t scared away by the plot, they’ll soon come in.”
---Bisbee Gazette

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a ghost story. . . December 2, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This was the first book I read by Margaret Falk, a.k.a J. Carson Black, that resulted in my following her career through many more wonderful novels. DARKSCOPE, a chilling story about lost love and old debts collected,is a ghost story about an old box camera that takes pictures of the past. Main character Chelsea, granddaughter to a turn of the century mining magnate, comes across a possessed box camera and soon finds herself caught up in the mystery of the images locked inside the camera. Black brings the rustic old town of Bisbee, Arizona to life--along with a beautiful ghost named Kathy who begs for revenge and retribution. J. Carson Black is a master at suspense. Don't miss this one or any of the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! April 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading J Carson Black's Laura Cardinal series I was not really sure what to expect since this book isn't part of that series. The book was like all J Carson Blacks books & one of her greatest strengths IMHO - she makes you feel like you are there & part of the story. She does such a wonderful job of describing everything without sounding fake or looking like she just added things to make the story longer.

In this book there are several stories taking place (2 major and 1 very minor). It is not hard to follow them except I would advise you to read this book over the course of a couple of days and not go on vacation w/o finishing it like I did. I had to think about who a couple of minor characters were when introduced again. All the characters were interesting and it was a hard book to put down because you want to know what happens.

There was no swearing and no sex for those of you who don't like that in your books. The book was not too long or too short and everything is wrapped up at the end of the book. Nothing was left hanging and you felt like you had the answers to everything.

All in all it was another great story and I can't wait to read her next book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Author not there yet June 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm one of those guys who when I decide to read an author I start out by reading his/her first published book. That's not always a good idea and I believe this is the 1st published work of Ms. Black's (real name Margaret Falk, aka Annie McKnight, aka M.J. Hawk). This novel's plot is a bit unmanageable and lacks character development. Lots of spooky moments included; too many. And the protagonist is unbelievable because she keeps getting her foot in dark situations but doesn't seem to be as anxious and upset by them as a normal person would--she's always willing to take on more. (She's an artist for Pete's sake not a Navy Seal!) There is a nice back history though and the ending has a nice twist. Ms. Black is a fan of Stephen King's "The Shining" and knowing readers will see evidence of that. But I recommend this vol. only to fans of Ms. Black's other works, some or all I intend to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ghost story! January 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I love fiction fantasy and good stories that deal with ghosts and spirits. Though this is definitely not fiction fantasy, it is a ghouly (sp) ghosty, tale. Lots of fun to read.

This trilogy makes you want more. I hope the author will produce many more books. They are a fast read and the plots are believably relevant to today's events. Makes you wonder!

5.0 out of 5 stars skin crawling April 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first book that I have read by this author and the first book that I felt the need to follow up on with a review. As a huge fan of supernatural and ghost story fiction I have gotten used to predictable storylines and regenerated plots. This book delivered neither. It was refreshing and original and there were times when every hair on my head stood up and my skin crawled. The book had a perfect ending that left my skin crawling again and made me want more. What a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars My First J. Carson Black Read.. Won't Be the Last March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I've downloaded several of this author's books, this is the first I've read. I was hooked during the first chapter - one of the best first chapters I've read in awhile. The book became a bit confusing to me as it switched from present to past, but I finally figured out the construct and felt the book flowed freely to the end. The writing reminds me a bit of one of my other favorite modern thriller authors (Scott Nicholson), because of her absolutely beautiful use of metaphor and ability to create powerful images in the mind of the reader:

"The sound that was no sound poured out of the radio. The sound of Amelia Earhart lost over the ocean, the sound of nuclear winter, the sound of the lost. It stayed with her, battering her consciousness, almost unbearable, the colorless landscape of dread silence."

It's the kind of writing you just want to read over and over. Beautifully-crafted "ghost" story/thriller.

More About the Author

As witness to the ongoing changes in publishing, J. Carson Black knew she had to raise her game. She'd always read and studied the best authors in her genre, but to survive, Black knew she must grow. And so she determined to expand beyond her comfort zone and write a big thriller.

A political junkie, J. Carson Black loved the cable TV news circus--the media's mad scramble to find sensational stories. So when a suspected child-killer's plane landed with all the pomp and circumstance of the space shuttle in Boulder, Colorado, Black took note. As it turned out, John Mark Karr did not kill JonBenet Ramsey; he'd merely played the media and fed their insatiable 24/7 appetite. This was the New American Way: celebrity for its own sake.

That seed grew into J. Carson Black's thriller THE SHOP, published by Thomas & Mercer.

Using social media, Black has made friends who share her passions and interests. Some of these friends are experts in their fields: homicide detectives, retired military, military analysts, a computer forensic expert, and even a Navy SEAL. Over time, these friends grew to trust Black and gave her entree into their world, and THE SHOP is the better for it.

A Tucson, Arizona native, J. Carson Black's ICON, a thriller set in the New West, was published in June 2012. She is currently at work on her next thriller for Thomas & Mercer.
