David Darling's sonnorous music moves gently, slowly, often in the depth's of the cello's range. This is appropriate for it conveys an intended woody-ness and darkness. The music is sparse - not unlike music for the shakuhachi, the Japanese baboo flute - and not minimalist as some have described (at least not in the sense of Terry Riley, Philip Glass, John Adams or Steven Reich). Nor is it depressing; it is instead the woods at dusk - haunting, foreboding, and intensely beautiful.

The sonorous cello tones that rhythmically ride through this album make it one of my favorite albums ever, and a favorite of many I have shared it with. It is not a typical taste. It is dark and, literally the feeling tones of a dark wood instrument come to life. It is the feeling of moving through a beautiful night in a dark forest. A music to match a heavy heart and lift it up into something more sublime and optimistic. Highest recommendation if you like rich slow music that is never boring.

I can't believe no one else has ever reviewed this CD because it is one of my favorite instrumental CD's of all time. This CD is solo cello with a dark edge. If you like new age music and dark ambient music, you should really enjoy this CD because it is kind of a merger of the two.

David Darling
"Dark Wood"

In many ways this 1993 recording by David Darling is a continuation of his 1992 release, entitled "Cello," which featured the first three "Darkwood" compositions. This CD presents the next four stages of "Darkwood" broken into individual subparts. These subparts resemble chapters in a much larger body of work, each telling a portion of the "Dark Wood" story.

"Darkwood IV, Journey" is haunting, complex, and strangely beautiful. It might be my favorite track on the album. Other standout tracks include "Darkwood VI, Beginning," and "Darkwood VII, New Morning." Yet, all of these pieces are captivating in their own way.

Released in 1995 by ECM, this album was recorded with the classical serenity one might expect from Manfred Eicher. The sound is crisp and the mood enthralling. The cover photo, aptly suited for an Anne Rice novel, perfectly depicts the temperament of the music you'll here on "Dark Wood."

David Darling is an equally talented composer, arranger, and musician. The instrumentation is first-rate, especially when you realize that the only instrument being played and overdubbed is the cello.

If you're looking for music that is quiet and introspective, look no further. Highly recommended.

This is essentially a "solo" album, it is David Darling playing as a multi-tracked cello orchestra. It is beautiful much in the tradition of Bach's Cello Suite's in their slower moments. Darling is an amazing cellist and the sound he gets from the instrument is like no other player I've ever heard. You will not be disappointed with this album!!!

Nobody plays the cello as well as David Darling. This is his best album ever! I've heard it over and over again, and each time I get more insight into his music! This is a MUST buy!

This is a good album of dark, introspective, solo cello music. As much as ECM has a reputation as a jazz label, much of their music is more new age than jazz, and this album is no exception. The problem I have with this album is that, for a "premium priced" CD it's too short: with the last track essentially being a reprise of the first, this is album is actually less than 40 minutes long. Record labels (and artists to some degree) need to get a clue at some point that with CD's being able to hold close to 80 minutes of music, filling an album with less than half of that capacity for a full priced CD just doesn't cut it, especially when they are only paying one artist. Also, as an aside, a word to Marketplace sellers: charging $14 for used copies of these ECM CD's is a ripoff. Marketplace sellers should be monitoring the list prices of the albums they are offering, because it doesn't make them look very good when they are selling a used CD for nearly the same price as a new one.
As far as introspective cello music goes, this is a nice CD, but I'd just as soon listen to the Bach cello suites; as far as "dark" music goes, I'd just as soon listen to some real "dark ambient," like Lustmord.

The cello is sometimes called the instrument of the soul. Nowhere is that more accurate than in the brooding improvisations on this album. Darling gets sounds from his instrument one would expect from a double bass. The recording is extraordinary -- there are moments when you can feel vibrations at the base of your spine. Dark as this music is, the impact is comforting. (Darling believes in the healing power of sound. He co-founded Music for People, a non-profit that promotes personal growth through musical expression.) This is music that acknowledges pain and commiserates with the wounded heart. It's like a beloved friend to whom one needs explain nothing.
