Editorial Reviews

Marilyn made her mark as a comely comic actress for MGM in films like 'Salute to the Marines, Swing Fever' and 'Summer Holiday', but she could carry a mean tune, too! These performances hail from her 1944 stint on Bing Crosby’s Kraft Music Hall radio series, and feature Marilyn backed by Bing’s longtime accompanists, the John Scott Trotter Orchestra. Utterly charming! Includes four duets with Bing himself, 'Easter Parade; Take It Easy; There’s a Small Hotel', and 'Surrey with the Fringe on Top', plus 'Wish I May, Wish I Might; How Come You Do Me Like You Do?; Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby?; Trolley Song; Tess’ Torch Song; I Never Knew; Milkman Keep Those Bottles Quiet', and 'When They Ask About You'. A glittering 'Collectors’ Choice Music' exclusive!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Maxwell Sings!, May 29, 2004

Marilyn Maxwell was a very beautiful and talented woman who just did not have enough chances to shine in Hollywood. At MGM, she was overlooked while people with less musical talent than she were heavily promoted. Collector's Choice has come to the rescue by releasing some of her great vocals from Bing Crosby's radio show. Marilyn sings twelve songs, four of them duets with Bing. When listening to this CD, it becomes clear that Marilyn Maxwell can sing any type of material and some of her renditions are near to definitive! Collector's choice...Thanks for this one!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice set of lesser-known Big Band vocals..., September 5, 2004
This review is from: Darling Diva (Audio CD)
A nice look at one of the neglected "songbirds" of the Big Band era... Actress Marilyn Maxwell sang for the John Scott Trotter Orchestra, which put her pretty squarely in the orbit of Bing Crosby and his organization. This disc gathers a dozen tracks, all with nice fidelity, from Bing's old radio show, circa 1944. A handful of duets with Crosby are a highlight of this disc -- they complimented each other quite nicely -- but Maxwell sounds pretty nice on her own, fronting Trotter's band. She's not dazzling or emotionally powerful, but she sounds nice and, like Trotter himself, she doesn't call a lot of attention to herself. It's workmanlike material, but it's kinda sweet.
