This review is from: Darlington Hoopes: The Political Biography of an American Socialist (Hardcover)
Most Americans are unaware the the United States had an activist Socialist Party from the late 1800s to the 1950s (with a small group remaining today). Before the Democrats, it was the Socialist Party that fought for child labor laws, pensions for the elderly, and living wages. One of the leaders of this activist era was Darlington Hoopes of Reading, Pennsylvania. This biography places his life in the broader context of American politics. As a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature in the 1930s, Hoopes led the successful fight to outlaw the use of child labor in factories, textile mills, and coal mines. At the national level, Hoopes wiorked with Norman Thomas in an unsuccessful attempt to maintain a viable national party that had previously attracted so many working class men and women. This book is an interesting look at the both the personal and political life of an American socialist.
