Interesting Westerns from the '50s,

This review is from: Darn Good Westerns Volume 2: Shotgun, Massacre, Three Desparate Men, Deputy Marshal, Outlaw Women, and Four Fast Guns (DVD)
There are a couple of pretty good westerns in this selection of Kit Parker/VCI flicks.
To begin with we have MASSACRE. I saw this one on TV when I was about 12 years old and could not believe how bad it was. It hasn't gotten any better with age. Considering the cast, the acting is stiff, the direction poor and the production values non-existent. It is interesting only because of the history surrounding the making of the picture, which is explained in an interview with Bob Lippert, included on the disk. I am Lippert's biggest fan, but this one is bad. OUTLAW WOMEN is interesting as a pre-women's lib flick. Anything with Marie Windsor is always watchable. The best one on the first disc, in my opinion, is THREE DESPERATE MEN. An action packed tale of three deputy marshals that end up on the wrong side of the law...a good cast with Jim Davis and Preston Foster. The second disc has FOUR FAST GUNS, and features an aging James Craig in the lead. DEPUTY MARSHSAL has Jon "Rama of the Jungle" Hall in the lead and is pretty much a run of the mill oater. The best of the bunch is SHOTGUN. You can never go wrong when Sterling Hayden saddles up and he is in fine fiddle here. Yvonne DeCarlo and Zachary Scott co-star, and there is lots of action, Indians and gunfights. These are not the best westerns ever made, but it is darn good to see them again!!!! Thanks VCI and Kit Parker.

Wilke --- So saddle up and ride the trails on DVD, compliments of VCI.
DISC ONE (1) 1. MASSACRE (1 June 1956) (76 min/Color) - Louis King (Director) - Dane Clark, James Craig The story line is the capturing of some unfriendly Indians, unruly gun smugglers and Mexican Federales, and that's just a start as we'll all meet at the end of this reel and enjoy what's in between. BIOS: Dane Clark Date of Birth: 26 February 1912 - Brooklyn, New York Date of Death: 11 September 1998 - Santa Monica, California James Craig (aka: James Henry Meador) Date of Birth: 4 February 1912 - Nashville, Tennessee Date of Death: 28 June 1985 - Santa Ana, California 2. THREE DESPERATE MEN (12 January 1951) (71 min/B&W) - Sam Newfield (Director) - Preston Foster, Jim Davis & Ross Latimer You'll encounter outlaws, train robbers and bank holdups as each scene is filled with action with some of our favorite fast guns. Jim Davis as usual gives his gritty hardcore performance. BIOS: Preston Foster Date of Birth: 24 August 1900 - Pitman, New Jersey Date of Death: 14 July 1970 - La Jolla, California Jim Davis (aka: Marlin Davis) Date of Birth: 26 August 1909 - Edgerton, Missouri Date of Death: 26 April 1981 - Northridge, California 3. OUTLAW WOMEN (28 April 1952) (75 mins/Color) - Sam Newfield (Director) - Marie Windsor, Richard Rober & Jackie Coogan The plot is a frontier town owned and run by women. And their leader is Marie Windsor who stands up to all outlaws and gives the men their come up pence, as only Windsor can do and my money is on her. BIOS: Marie Windsor (aka: Emily Marie Bertelsen) Date of Birth: 11 December 1919 - Marysvale, Utah Date of Death: 10 December 2000 - Beverly Hills, California Richard Rober (aka: Richard Steven Rauber) Date of Birth: 14 May 1910 - Rochester, New York Date of Death: 26 May 1952 - Santa Monica, California (road accident) Jackie Coogan (aka: John Leslie Coogan Jr.) Date of Birth: 26 October 1914 - Los Angeles, California Date of Death: 1 March 1984 - Santa Monica, California DISC TWO (2) 4. SHOTGUN (24 April 1955) (80 min/Color) - Lesley Selander (Director) - Sterling Hayden, Yvonne De Carlo & Zachary Scott Sterling Hayden gives a believable performance as the deputy, with Yvonne De Carlo and Zachary Scott bringing to the forefront some exciting scenes. This is nearly an A-Western genre in my personal opinion, as our characters unfold with a pins and needles Rory Calhoun screenplay ending --- This oater is the best of the lot. BIOS: Sterling Hayden (aka: Sterling Relyea Walter) Date of Birth: 26 March 1916 - Upper Montclair, New Jersey Date of Death: 23 May 1986 - Sausalito, California Yvonne De Carlo (aka: Margaret Yvonne Middleton) Date of Birth: 1 September 1922 - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Date of Death: 8 January 2007 - Woodland Hills, California Zachary Scott (aka: Zachary Thomson Scott Jr) Date of Birth: 21 February 1914 - Austin, Texas Date of Death: 3 October 1965 - Austin, Texas 5. DEPUTY MARSHAL (28 October 1949) (60 min/B&W) - William Berke (Director) - Jon Hall, Frances Langford & Dick Foran As the story goes a split-butt rifle was found as it was used in a rustling raid. Only thing to do is telegraph the Winchester Arms Company and ask the name of the purchaser based on their serial number records. Time and skill is on the side of the right as the wrong is sweating it out. Where will the guilt settle in this unusual story by William Berke and Charles Heckelmann. BIOS: Jon Hall (aka: Charles Hall Locher) Date of Birth: 26 February 1915 - Fresno, California Date of Death: 13 December 1979 - North Hollywood, California Frances Langford (aka: Frances Newbern) Date of Birth 4 April 1913 - Lakeland, Florida Date of Death: 11 July 2005 - Jensen Beach, Florida Dick Foran (aka: John Nicholas Foran) Date of Birth: 18 June 1910 - Flemington, New Jersey Date of Death: 10 August 1979 - Panorama City, California 6. FOUR FAST GUNS (10 February 1960) (72 min/B&W) - William J. Hole Jr. (Director) - James Craig, Martha Vickers, Brett Halsey & Edgar Buchanan Our hero takes a stand to restore order in a corrupt town. But wait, his outlaw brother is hired to eliminate him, thus a showdown is in the making. What happens next only purchasing this Western Collection will tell -- The price is worth the admission. BIOS: Martha Vickers Date of Birth: 28 May 1925 - Ann Arbor, Michigan Date of Death: 2 November 1971 - Hollywood, California Edgar Buchanan Date of Birth: 20 March 1903 - Humansville, Missouri Date of Death: 4 April 1979, Palm Desert, California Brett Halsey (aka: Charles Oliver Hand) Date of Birth: 20 June 1933 - Santa Ana, California Date of Death: Still Living BONUS FEATURES: 1. Trailers Massacre Shotgun Four Fast Guns 2. Interview with Robert L. Lippert, Jr., producer of MASSACRE These are not award winning Westerns, but fun to watch --- Great job and thanks to Robert Blair and his staff at VCI Entertainment, who keeps this genre alive --- all my heroes have been cowboys! Total Time: 448 min on DVD ~ VCI Home Video KPF-598 ~ (10/20/2009)
