Editorial Reviews

Disc One: MASSACRE: Indian treachery leads to tragedy in this made-on-location Western adventure with Dane Clark and James Craig as officers of the law who lead a small group of men into redmen territory to investigate reports of guns being sold to unfriendly Yaqui Indians. Every arrow screams death in an unexpected finale. 1956 (76 minutes) THREE DESPARATE MEN: Deputies Preston Foster and Jim Davis save their brother Ross Latimer from hanging for a crime he didn t commit, but a guard is killed in the fracas and this makes all three hunted criminals. Now living to defy the law instead of defend it, they rob a train and then brazenly attempt a one-of-a-kind double-holdup. 1951 (72 minutes) OUTLAW WOMEN: Meet the babes who shoot to thrill and make the coyotes howl! In this offbeat Western yarn, the town of Las Mujertes is run by women and controlled by saloon owner Marie Windsor, but male visitors (including Jackie Coogan as a gunslinger!) create complications. 1951 (72 minutes) Disc Two: SHOTGUN: Sterling Hayden challenges the fury of the untamed west with a SHOTGUN in this gritty outdoor drama. He's a deputy who vows to avenge the murder of a marshal and hits the vengeance trail, encountering half-breed Yvonne DeCarlo and bounty hunter Zachary Scott. Tracking the killer leads into Indian country, where they are captured by redmen who pit Hayden and his quarry against each other in a shotgun duel. Harrison's Reports hailed this Technicolor Western as "fast, exciting and interesting ... it holds [the viewer] in tense suspense." 1955 (80 minutes) DEPUTY MARSHAL: Wrongly suspected of murder, deputy marshal Jon Hall devises a plan to draw all the actual suspects (including Dick Foran and Russell Hayden) out into the open and prove which one of them committed murder in order to profit off of the coming railroad line. Hall's real-life wife, Frances Langford, provides a few songs. "Fast-moving action" Motion Picture Exhibitor. 1949 (76 minutes) FOUR FAST GUNS: Against a backdrop of Arizona landscapes, this offbeat Western spins the yarn of a wanted man (James Craig) who turns unofficial lawman to tame the town of Purgatory--but finds that the main troublemaker is a crippled saloon owner whose infirmity, according to the Western code, keeps him safe from gun justice. Craig becomes the target of a succession of hired leadslingers--including his own brother (Brett Halsey). Who is the FASTEST of the Four Fast Guns? 1959 (72 minutes). Bonus Features: Trailers, Interview with Robert L. Lippert, Jr., producer of MASSACRE. Product Specs: 2-DVD9s; Dolby Mono; 448 minutes; Color/B&W; 1.85:1 / 1.33:1 / 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA-NR; Year - 1956, 1951, 1951, 1955, 1949, 1959; SRP - $29.99.

There are a couple of pretty good westerns in this selection of Kit Parker/VCI flicks.

To begin with we have MASSACRE. I saw this one on TV when I was about 12 years old and could not believe how bad it was. It hasn't gotten any better with age. Considering the cast, the acting is stiff, the direction poor and the production values non-existent. It is interesting only because of the history surrounding the making of the picture, which is explained in an interview with Bob Lippert, included on the disk. I am Lippert's biggest fan, but this one is bad.

OUTLAW WOMEN is interesting as a pre-women's lib flick. Anything with Marie Windsor is always watchable.

The best one on the first disc, in my opinion, is THREE DESPERATE MEN. An action packed tale of three deputy marshals that end up on the wrong side of the law...a good cast with Jim Davis and Preston Foster.

The second disc has FOUR FAST GUNS, and features an aging James Craig in the lead. DEPUTY MARSHSAL has Jon "Rama of the Jungle" Hall in the lead and is pretty much a run of the mill oater. The best of the bunch is SHOTGUN. You can never go wrong when Sterling Hayden saddles up and he is in fine fiddle here. Yvonne DeCarlo and Zachary Scott co-star, and there is lots of action, Indians and gunfights.

These are not the best westerns ever made, but it is darn good to see them again!!!! Thanks VCI and Kit Parker.

DISC ONE (1)

1. MASSACRE (1 June 1956) (76 min/Color) - Louis King (Director) - Dane Clark, James Craig
The story line is the capturing of some unfriendly Indians, unruly gun smugglers and Mexican Federales, and that's just a start as we'll all meet at the end of this reel and enjoy what's in between.

BIOS:
Dane Clark
Date of Birth: 26 February 1912 - Brooklyn, New York
Date of Death: 11 September 1998 - Santa Monica, California

James Craig (aka: James Henry Meador)
Date of Birth: 4 February 1912 - Nashville, Tennessee

2. THREE DESPERATE MEN (12 January 1951) (71 min/B&W) - Sam Newfield (Director) - Preston Foster, Jim Davis & Ross Latimer
You'll encounter outlaws, train robbers and bank holdups as each scene is filled with action with some of our favorite fast guns. Jim Davis as usual gives
his gritty hardcore performance.

These were all pretty good westerns, except for Massacre. With that exception, all crisp, clear B & W and Color prints. The performance of Marta Roth in Massacre, is its only saving grace. Shotgun was the best film, with Jim Davis in Three Desparate Men, being a standout supporting performance. Do not watch the trailers before watching the films, as they give away some of the plot points, particularly of Four Fast Guns. Four Fast Guns has a great transition, unusual for a Western, after the confrontation with one of the fast guns. Sterling Hayden fans will not be disappointed with Shotgun; Laconic pre-Clint Eastwood. If you have seen all or most of the great Westerns, one or more times, these are a good start on a second tier. As much as I love the great westerns, it was nice to see these films, none of which I had ever seen, or heard of, before. Not a lot of known stars, but pretty good stories with good acting in all of the films. There were a lot of very bad westerns made (eary John Wayne, for instance)with stiff, bad acting, but these are well above those fims. Well worth the price.

These are great Westerns and in great quality too! VCI and Kit Parker did an awesome job on transferring these titles. I think the best quality movies provided are all of them but Massacre, Shotgun, Four Fast Guns and Deputy Marshall has the best quality. Only Shotgun, Massacre and Four Fast Guns are in Widescreen and the rest are Full frame format. These movies stars: Sterling Hayden, Dane Clark, Yvonne De Carlo, Preston Foster, Marie Windsor, John Hall, James Craig, Martha Vickers, Zachary Scott, Jim Davis, Frances Langford, Robert J. Wilke, plus others! Overall this is a great set of Westerns and I would recommend it.
