5.0 out of 5 stars Blister Free
My husband is in the Army and constantly struggles with athletes foot and blisters from hyper-hydrosis (extreme foot sweating). He sometimes gets blisters just from everyday walking around in his combat boots, and always gets blisters every time he runs in the mornings. 3.0 out of 5 stars Too tight in the calf
Socks are well cushioned in the foot area but above the ankle the material is much thinner and way too tight. Good for people with thin calves, not the rest of us. Somewhat itchy on the top of the foot. Will keep shopping for the ultimate wool sock.

My husband is in the Army and constantly struggles with athletes foot and blisters from hyper-hydrosis (extreme foot sweating). He sometimes gets blisters just from everyday walking around in his combat boots, and always gets blisters every time he runs in the mornings. Yesterday he trained on land-navigation over difficult terrain in the pouring rain. He came home soaking wet and excited about how these socks kept his feet warm in the wet morning and cool when the sun came out from behind the clouds. Most of all he was excited because he had no blisters!

These are by far the most comfortable hiking socks I've ever owned. They don't hold moisture or cause blisters like cotton, don't overheat in warmer weather, and stay perfectly warm in cooler weather, even when wet or dirty. The fit is excellent (how many socks are available in 5 distinct sizes?), and so far they have never bunched up or slid down my calf while hiking. After trekking in the same pair for several days (allowing them to air out overnight) they don't seem to hold any odor and stay soft -- not at all "crusty" in the morning. These have been up and down Mt. Adams with me and on numerous shorter hikes, with seemingly no change in fit or quality after many washes. I'm not sure if it's really necessary, but I've always allowed them to air dry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smarter than Smart Wool???, January 4, 2011
I was Darn tired of freezing my feet off in my cold cement floor shop every winter so I finally splurged on a good pair of workboots and decided that good boots deserved great socks so I ordered 2 pairs of Darn Tough socks. Wore them 7 days a week for 2 weeks washing them every other day with little or no odor. Saw a little pilling after the 1st wash (tumble dry low heat with no shrinkage) but the pilling never got any worse (been wearing them most days for a month now). I do wish they were a little higher on the calf. With the lifetime guarentee the Darn Tough socks will last assuming you are willing to send them back for any needed repairs sometime in the distant future but since I'm a lazy soul who will never send worn out socks back for replacement these socks seem great with this limited testing time (a month).

Update, Well I've had these socks for a full year now and they get better with age. For 6 months (cooler months) I've worn these socks every day, 2 days worn and then grab the 2nd pair I ordered last year. Machine wash cold, dry on medium with my normal laundry and they still fit great, even better after a few washings. I wear them outside without shoes on the cement driveway (even on wet days) to get my mail ect., they seem to dry within a minute of getting back to the house. Walk on the grass in them taking the garbage out... and they barely show any signs of wear and the drying on medium heat with my jeans ect doesn't seem to make them shrink... what more can you ask for so... I ordered 11 pairs for my family (and 2 extra pairs myself) for Christmas presents (got a different color for the women) and thus far everybody (even my Mother) likes them. I intend to try some of their CoolMax socks for summer wear. expensive??? yep, until you've worn a pair for a few weeks and then the value really shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sock. Watch large/extra-large sizing, November 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a big fan of Darn Tough socks and find myself wearing them every chance I have. They do fit snugly, giving a lot of support, and some models with less merino and more Coolmax seem to shrink just a tad, I have found. With that in mind, I sized up to an extra-large in this boot sock and find that the sock is a little long. I wear an 11.5 to 12 D shoe, and the sizing chart puts me at the top end of L or into the 12+ designation for XL. The XL is too big -- a little too long (heal rides up the back, and too roomy in the forefoot and toe areas). Comfy and nice, but not a secure fit for ski boots, wading boots, or any technical applications where you might want a snug fit. They will be fine for knocking around in looser fitting snow boots. As with all Darn Tough socks, they are extremely well made a durable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Diabetics and Those with Athlete's Foot, July 4, 2009

I have diabetes and need a snug fitting sock. I also have athlete's foot. Merino wool breathes and wicks moisture away from the foot which is critical to cure athlete's foot (along with fungal cream). My podiatrist likes this sock. My foot size is 13 wide and I wear an XL sock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Free Replacement???!!!, October 10, 2011

Super comfortable. Not as much padding as SmartWools with extra-thick padding. BUT, if they will stand behind their replacement guarantee, then they'll be the best deal ever!

Not too tight on the calves, but they do stay up... Super warm. Good stretch. MADE IN THE USA!!!

If I have ANY problem with the replacement I'll be revising this review for all to know.

If the Vermont Sock Co. is as good as their word, I'll also be revising this review for all to know.

Great socks

I'm so glad I came across these socks on Amazon. At first the price deterred me, but after reading the description and excellent feedback I decided to place an order. These are without a doubt the highest quality winter sock I've ever owned, and I've been through many designs from various manufacturers over the years. I'm happy to say I will only be purchasing winter socks from Darn Tough going forward, as these have exceeded the level of quality, fit, & style of every other pair of socks I've ever owned. I also appreciate the fact these are made in the USA.

I'm an active guy, having recently spent half a day shoveling snow from our street after a blizzard. I wore my new Darn Toughs all day. They were great, in particular because they handle moisture so well. They kept my feet warm and comfortable throughout the day, despite rough conditions outside. And even after I came in and took my boots off, I could still wear them without worrying about moisture, smell, blisters, etc. Excellent product, highly recommended! I've already ordered another pair and will add more next winter.

I bought these at the same time as I bought a few pairs of REI brand, and I can tell you that I'm always a little bit happier on mornings when I get to put on my Darn Tough brand socks. They also hold up well on multi-day outings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never got excited about a sock before this one, January 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's a sock. Won't let your toes get sweaty in snow shoes and will keep them warm in deep snow.

con Because it's Merino wool, it smells when you wash it. Just remember to hang dry.
