New Wave Ska Punk Rock...,
By
This review is from: Darrin's Coconut Ass: Live (Audio CD)
This is a live 8-song ep recorded at a place in Omaha they describe as a bowling alley/pool hall/radio station/volleyball court/nightclub/bar/recording studio. I would be in heaven. I would describe this band as New Wave Ska Punk Rock. All the songs are very cool covers with Elvis Costello/Just Like Heaven, Joe Jackson/Is She Really Going Out With Him, Mott The Hoople/Feel Like Making Love, The Specials/Nite Club, The Who/The Kids Are Alright, Peter Tosh/Downpressor Man, The Buzzcocks/You Say You Don't Love Me and The Police/Man In The Suitcase. I looked up some info on them and it said in 1996 they played 382 live gigs! Also, when I played this on my computer I was surprised to find a pretty funny montage of video clips.

I'm a big fan of covers/remakes. I like to see how an artist interprets a song. In this short CD, Goldfinger gives us a series of high-energy, tongue-in-cheek covers. As the saying goes, "They're not pulling any musical punches." But this is FUN! It's also some of the best workout music I know.

I remember the first time I heard this record. I was in my friends car and he put this CD in and Goldfinger's thundering fast punk cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" came blasting on the stereo. I almost nearly had a heartattack laughing and listened in horror as I heard a great song be in, my first impression, butchered. I wanted to scream when he told me they covered "The Kids Are Alright" but then he let me borrow this album and after several listens, you start to like the covers and you kinda gotta admire Goldfinger in a weird sort of way for covering songs outside of their genre. All and all, this is just a fun covers record. I would not run out to buy this album but get a burned copy from a friend or find a cheap used copy.

I don't know if it is because of the story behind this recording that makes it so much better, or is it actually just that Goldfinger as so damn good, but this is a masterpiece.
There is something about the fact that one night, after a good celebration, they decided to head straight to the studio, and record random covers for songs that they like - something that makes it feel like you are actually getting to know the real people who are "Goldfinger" - you get more personal with them. And the fact that they are not using original texts, but rather paying respect to old songs, and just giving them their own interpretations, is great. As opposed to the "remake spirit" that has diseased the industry in the last few years, this one's a true success. Great songs were picked, awesome executions were delivered, and unique personalization was achieved by the drunken singing and the "private party mood" they were all in.

i couldnt find this album in stores, but i downloaded it, and its pretty great.. if you can find 'Downpressor Man', its one of the coolest songs ever.. hard to believe this is live, too (its flawless). Great album for a goldfinger fan or any music fan, and downpressor man has one of the coolest atmospheres of any song (not to mention kick ass guitar work)

There are only 2 decent songs on this CD. Goldfinger has made my favorite CD, "Open Your Eyes", so I bought this and it definitely wasn't at the same level as Open Your Eyes. If you buy one of their CD's, don't get this one.
