3.0 out of 5 stars Great art, but not a step by step if that's what you want
This book has some really great artwork for inspiration, but not much in the way of step by step "how to" information for those of you who might be looking for an instructional book on digital painting. Like I said, the artwork is wonderful and the book is put together well with "how tos" from featured artists, but it has a hefty price tag for an inspirational book which...

Want to paint like the pros? There's nothing better than learning from the pros themselves.

Concept Art is the fourth book in the d'artiste Digital Artists Master Class series. The series is actually a look at the process of creating art in tutorial style. This book presents George Hull, Andrew Jones, Nicolas Bouvier and Viktor Antonov with a total of 12 tutorials.

Each artist has a biography written by themselves on their beginnings, education, inspiration, life and career in art. The tutorials that follow are very well captioned. They explain the style, idea and the execution. Each comes with a still from the work in progress.

Right after the tutorials is an invited artist gallery. That's where the 4 artist choose some of their favourite paintings from other artists and talk about them. This gallery is impressive. Let's just say talent shortage in the art industry is not a big problem.

This book is fairly pricey, as with all Ballistic books. I think it's pretty worth the money, considering that finding tutorials like this on the Internet is nearly impossible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Book!, February 16, 2009
This review is from: D'artiste: Concept Art (Paperback)
This is such a beautiful book. I ordered this as a gift to an aspiring concept artist and I knew this would further encourage him in his work. I myself was blown away just looking through all of Ballistic's published art books. These artists produce such mind-blowing stuff, makes you think that they get their inspiration and amazing skills straight from "the source"!

What's great about this book though is that it has tutorials by the 4 main artists. It is a step by step walk-through in how they did a particular painting. They also have an invited artists bit at the end profile of each artist - and these are ppls work that they like themselves. It's a good humble way to showcase your peers work and give them credit.

Overall a great purchase. If you bough it from Ballistic and shipped it to Canada, shipping alone is $30 plus their retail price tag on the book. It is pretty pricy! Getting it through Powells through Amazon made it a bit more affortable, though in general it is a fancy book and the price in reflected in this. Quality is top-notch though! Great puchase. Will be inspiring for many years!

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but it may as well be Matte Painting 2..., March 14, 2007
This review is from: D'artiste: Concept Art (Paperback)
I was so excited to get this and I am fairly pleased with it still, but it is still a big let down. I was expecting more of character concepts like the cover would suggest. I also would have like some vehicle concepts. It really just turned out to be a Matte Painting 2 in my opinion. Like I said beautiful work but don't expect character or vehicle design. You would probably be better to go with Scott Roberston's books for vehicle design and as for character design, I am still looking.
