That Song,
By A Customer
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Filmmusik (Audio CD)
If you love "Das Boot" this CD is a must, but there are those among us who ask why they didn't include the Tipperary song and particularly, "What is that French song?" Fans will remember the scene when the captain asks the radio operator to play a certain record for him. The radio man smiles and plays, "J'attendrai" by Rina Ketty, but it isn't included in the soundtrack and the producers fail to list this recording in the end credits of the film. If you, like the captain, love this recording...it is available on Amazon.com on a great CD entitled "Les Grandes Chansons Francaises: Classic Hits of French Song" on band #3. These are recordings that helped sustain Europeans who lived through World War II and, like the captain, remind them of better times. Listen, especially, to the anthem of those days, band #14, "Parlez-Moi D'Amour" by Lucienne Boyer.

Doldinger's other big score!!!!!,
By Ingo Kaiser (Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Filmmusik (Audio CD)
"Das Boot" is Doldinger's first major filmscore and is together with "Die Unendliche Geschichte"(Neverending Story) his best work. This score is so hauntingly brilliant, be it the main theme that you will be whizzling for hours to come or other cues that will make you believe you are trapped in a submarine some 1000 feet under the sea.One of my favorite cues on the album is "Auslaufen". It's a really moving theme that is similiar to "Sümpfe der Traurigkeit"(Swamps of sadness) in the 'Neverending Story'.To have it complete you should buy this German import CD.

Power and Darkness,
By
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Filmmusik (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to this film composed, arranged, directed and produced by Klaus Doldinger will evoke vivid images of the movie if you have seen Das Boot which is one of the finest war films ever made. If you have not seen the movie you will still be able to understand the emotions of excitement, fear, relief and even boredom which grip the crew of the U-96 protrayed in the film. I enjoy listening to the soundtrack while at work on my headphones. The music paints an emotional canvas, it's hard not to let it effect you, but if you enjoy high quality classical music you will like this CD. The tune MUSS I DENN will remind you of standing on a pier watching a ship return to (or leaving) port. MON GARS and SCHWARZE AUGEN sound what I imagine the interior of a French night club from the 40's would sound like. I used to have the album version which included the TIPARARI SONG, that tune was not included on this CD, too bad as it's a neat song. The CD has a section (tracks 25-30) that include dialoge and sound effects, try it on your suround sound hi-fi stereo...you will be glad your occupation is not sub-driver as the destroyers close in with sonar and depth charges! Has this soundtrack gotten old sounding over the years? "Not yet commrade, not yet!"

The Songs the Das Boot CD didn't have...,
By Robert A Diaz (WA State) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Filmmusik (Audio CD)
I fell in love with the Das Boot movie and soon after, the hard-to-get soundtrack. It brings the magic of the movie to my car or Discman anywhere I go. Thank you SO much!To satisfy one reviewer's disappointment, the original "J'attendrai" and "Tipperary" songs are available at the following site: http://www.schiffsmodelle.via.t-online.de/download.html. They should've been included on the soundtrack, but I hope this helps. This fills a BIG gap in completing the total magic of Das Boot. Best to you!

Soundtrack for Silent Hunter 2,
By "tommel6" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Filmmusik (Audio CD)
This is, of course, the soundtrack to the greatest submarine movie ever made, but it is also a good soundtrack to Silent Hunter 2, which will probably be the greatest WW2 submarine simulation game ever made. The CD in itself is good, but does not include "Tipperary" as sung by the Red Army Chorus and which provides a memorable moment in the film. -Tom

I remember Das Boot as an isolated work. Can you imagine at the last hard years of Cold War, a West German production bassed on a submarine at the Atlantic Battle?
No matter the film, its soundtrack has very interesting features. The 80's are supposed to be like a lost decade in many musical ways. The nowadays critics disguise the syntetizer... lets say at 100%. So, a lot of years after i saw this film, I notice a lot of great elements at this soundtrack. And of course, I could consider it at an isolated film music, that can show anybody that 80's weren't lost years in every sense or for everybody. There's no easy way to find an european epic music score at that time... or in any time. I guess it is inspired in Vaugham Williams's Antartic Symphony, originally written for the movie "Scott of the Antartic". It's not low budget, by the way.

If you love the film the music that goes with it makes building U Boat models just that much more fun as well as reading books about the subject. It's like a sound track for U Boat books.

A soundtrack that will take you to the bottom of the sea.,
By Carlos Santillan (Mexico City, Mexico.) - See all my reviews

This is an excellent CD, the score and incendental music of this movie are very good and when you play it the scenes of this memorable movie are evoked in your mind. I liked especially the versions with effects and dialogs. I play them while commuting to the job and they fill me with energy and a positive mood (I recommend for this the track 25: "Konvoi").
