Das Boot blew me away!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Das Boot: Original Soundtrack (aka The Boat) (Audio CD)
A classic soundtrack from a classic film. The music of Klaus Doldinger is alternately brave, robust, thoughtful, sad, and enlightening. The music unashamedly attempts to pull the heartstrings of the listener. This CD is well worth the money to any fan of Das Boot. Totalling over an hour of music, it includes all important parts of the original soundtrack, including the source music from the recreation center. It's even possible to hear music that is drowned out in the film by depth charges or dialogue! And as an extra bonus, several excerpts from the movie are included at the end of the disk. This allows the listener to experience the full effect digital remastering had on the rerelease. The screams, explosions and sonar practically put you at the bottom of the Atlantic. Essential for any fan of Das Boot.

Fantastic soundtrack, but....,

Eminantly recognisable and fitting soundtrack to one of the most powerful war films made. I've had a copy of this soundtrack since it came out first on audio cassette. This edition has extra tracks, mainly taken from the movie with dialogue intact which is nice...
However, there are several iconic pieces inexplicably missing from this CD (one of which was on the original cassette release!). J'ai Atttendrai by Rina Ketty is missing, as is 'The Tipperary Song'. Also absent is the Erzherzog Albrecht Marsch, which plays as the boat finally returns to port. These ommissions are surprising, as they occur as obvious musical cues in the film: "The Tipperary Song if you please!" and the captain's favourite song "you know the one" (J'ai Attendrai). So, I had to buy an extra couple of discs just to get hold of these pieces: Vladimir Aleksandrov - Soviet Army Chorus & Band for Tipperary; Preußische & Österreichische Märsche by Karajan for Albrecht Marche and Chansons Françaises de Légende, Vol. 2 for J'ai Attendrai. Overall though, the best version of this OST available.

Klaus Doldinger's score to Das Boot has the same intensity and power that make Zimmer's Crimson Tide and Poledouris' Hunt for Red October such great music. Has a good mix of techno-like rhythms and lonely accoustic music. The CD has some non-source music from the film (Muss I Denn, Mon Gars), and a few of the tracks are repeated with the character's German dialogue. I actually bought my copy in Austria, but the new Director's Cut version has the same material.

It's no mystery...,

The movie and the resultant soundtrack have definitely earned their places in entertainment history. The relatively-low-budget foreign film that took the world by storm in the early '80s and became a cult hit would soon fade into commercial obscurity, entombed in a cold, damp vault without so much as a "Fare-thee-well" by the filmmaking fungoids of the time. The challenges this film had to face to make it marketable to America were monumental: The synchronization of English translation to the German mouthing, along with the accompanying Foley artistry qualify for some sort of official recognition, being groundbreaking in technique. An even bigger feat is that it was once feared that a soundtrack couldn't emerge from the nearly-ruined, vaulted magnetic-tape music score. Klaus saves the day! He had an archived copy, and the results are what you hear on this CD. Remastered to digital, it is fuller and crisper than you could imagined it could've ever become.
If it wasn't for Klaus and a few others who had vision beyond the greedy movie industry, Das Boot would've sailed into obscurity and extinction; Thank God for small miracles. Now future generations can come to appreciate such greatness: Herr Doldinger's concise, precise, clean, unpretentious music direction and composition, a phenomena which has the strength to penetrate every fibre of your psyche and send it in a direction wildly reminiscent of the U-96's journey in the film...The highs, the lows, the seemingly-mundane, the suspenseful, the urgent, you know the rest. If you love the film, this soundtrack is a must. As with my Mark Isham soundtrack of "The Beast", this CD will never leave my library as long as I'm alive.

Das Boot is by far one of the most intense, intriguing, and riveting war movies of all time. Set in World War II, from the perspective of German u-boat submarine sailors, this film keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! This film engrosses you in the dark, lonely lives of these men, sent to war away from their families, and their fight for survival. Coupled with a wildly fantastic soundtrack, this film takes you on a gripping dive into the lives of these men, and before you know it, you are rooting for them to make it!!!! By far, one of the best war movies around!!!!
