5 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Bogdan Petculescu on February 26, 2012
The German composer, organist and teacher Wolfgang Stockmeier recorded the complete J S Bach organ works between 1977 and 1981 for Art & Music, and those recordings are now available from Membran (Documents) in two box sets with ten CDs each.

An interesting thing about this cycle is that it is played exclusively on Kreienbrinck organs from various churches in Germany - this brings a degree of homogeneity which sometimes lacks from other similar traversals. The sound is beautiful, with enough breathing space and at the same time finely detailed.

The interpretation is knowledgeable, restrained and unaffected, with very little rubato and no eccentricities. Bach's counterpoint is clearly revealed and its effect, enhanced by the predominately slow tempi and the richness and warmth of the sound, is always uplifting and sometimes even mesmerizing.

This is a work of reference, backed up as it is by dedication, serious scholarship and superb technique.

For those interested, it may be worth adding that there is a very fine set of Karg-Elert's organ works played by Wolfgang Stockmeier on the CPO label, unfortunately out of print now but still available (at least partially) as MP3 downloads from Amazon.

Wolfgang Stockmeier seems to have undertaken only one major recording project in his life, yet among the dozens of weighty contenders in Bach's organ works...what can you say? There's nothing to touch it. A little like the movie "Finding Forrester", and the enigmatic author writing the one "great novel" of the 20th century, then promptly disappearing.

I've never heard a set of Bach's organ works I didn't like. It's certainly no loss traversing MC Alain, Walcha, Hurford, Preston, etc. but listening here, I have for the first time the sense of really hearing everything that Bach wrote in these pieces. Only with Gould's piano previously was the separation of voices so revelatory and distinct..the architecture so assured. Here without eccentricity. What a find!
