More About the Author

Marla Heller is a Registered Dietitian, and holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she also completed doctoral course work in public health. Marla worked as a dietitian at the University of Illinois Medical Center in the Heart-Lung Transplant Unit, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and the Cardiac Step-Down Unit. She has taught nutrition courses at UIC and Dominican University, and taught nutrition to student chefs at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. She was a civilian dietitian with the US Navy and worked for the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Marla has been a pioneer in bringing the DASH diet from the research lab to the kitchen table. In her books and her new DVD, she shares the plan that makes DASH so easy to follow. In addition to her DASH diet books, Marla wrote the 4-week menu plan for Win the Weight Game by Sarah, the Duchess of York. She is a frequently featured nutrition expert for broadcast, print, and internet media. She has been a spokesperson for the Greater Midwest Affiliate of the American Heart Association and is a Past-President of the Illinois Dietetic Association.

In 3 months, I have lost 23 pounds, gone down 5 points in my body fat percentage, and lost 4.5 inches from my waist...after struggling with my weight for decades. (I received a copy of the of the plan guidelines and sample menus in September through the author's Facebook group.) In addition to the outer changes, my cholesterol level dropped to 121, with a commensurate reduction in triglycerides and LDLs.

I do know a little bit about nutrition (what heavy person doesn't?). I wanted a plan that followed sound nutritional guidelines and had some research to back it up. This one does. Marla does a great job of explaining why the things I learned about nutrition in my 20s aren't working for me in my 40s, and then lays out, clearly, concisely, and with menus and recipes, what *will* work...and it did. I was nervous about cutting down on grains--I attempted the Atkins plan a few times and it just made me sick--but I felt fine. The menu plans are satisfying and tasty, and Marla has really helped me to re-frame the way I think about food.

The 2-week turbocharge is a great way to kick off the plan: all the claims about resetting your body's expectations proved true for me. In the 3 months I've been on this plan I started a new job; celebrated my anniversary, Halloween, my birthday, & Thanksgiving, and now find myself surrounded by all the Christmas treats...and still find it easier than it's ever been to make conscious choices about what I eat.

I hope you find this helpful...if you've been fighting this battle for decades and began to think nothing was ever going to work, give this an honest shot. It may change your life. My weigh-in this morning was the lowest it's been in ten years.

I have been following this program via Marla's Facebook group since September. I have always struggled with my weight and in late August found that I had very high blood pressure. My husband (a General Practitioner) had been to a talk on hypertension where they talked about the benefits of The Dash Diet. I researched the diet and decided to give it a go and so glad I did! I have lost a total of 14 kilos (just over 30lbs) and my blood pressure has come right down. I'm not one for exercise but I did start walking every day. This program is the best and one that I can see myself doing for life. Marla and the group have certainly changed my life and I am so grateful for their support.

My doctor noted that my recent weight gain was impacting my high blood pressure and recommended the dash diet. The book will not steer you wrong, in that it gives solid, scientifically researched food principles. I've had a lot of experience with various diets and have always stayed away from the trendy ones. This book advocates less sodium, lower fats and lots of fruits and vegetables. Where it lost me was the induction phase. The author warns that you will eat very repetitively during this phase, but its only two weeks. It reminded me of Atkins/South Beach - trendy. I was glad that this was not the first diet I tried, because I knew how to substitute for tomatoes, which I don't enjoy. But it was hard to eat that strictly.

This was also the first diet book I bought for my Kindle app, and I found it very difficult to move back and forth in the book, even with bookmarks. I would have preferred hyperlinks to the recipes in the back, so. I didn't lose my place in the text when I needed to cook a recipe. I may have had a better experience if I'd bought the hard copy.

I am a 67 year old, diabetic for twenty-five years, over-weight, woman with hypertension who recently found I had four blockages in two main arteries, and subsequently needed four stents inserted to combat an immediate heart attack. I have attempted to lose weight on everything that has come down the pike over the last fifty years including the Stillman Diet, Nutri System, Atkins, Weight Watchers (four times!), Mayo Clinic (?) Diet, Hard-Boiled Egg and Grapefruit Diet, a diet doctor who gave me thryoid meds and told me to eat chicken and broccoli once a day (which gave me numerous medical problems in the long-run), every powdered diet drink available, well- known packaged meal plans, etc. I finally just gave up. Fear of imminent death from more blockages and the high blood pressure caused me to do a little research and I came up with the Dash Diet being voted best diet plan three years in a row. I ordered Marla Heller's book, The Dash Diet Weight Loss Solution, and when I tell you that this is the first diet I ever saw that actually had my favorite food - cheese - on it, I wanted to dance. I did the Phase I Section and lost over ten pounds. I am now in Phase II, and have lost a total of eighteen pounds, adding some carbs which scared me as my blood sugar readings have been in the 90's and very low 100's, but they have remained low because I am eating the right carbs in the right amounts! Have not had my HbA1C done since I was on it, but am very excited for the next three month lab test. I am full and satisfied, and love the choice of foods and snacks. This isn't a diet where you need to chart everything. The menus are clear and you pick and choose what you want. It's a win-win situation and I thank God I found this.Read more ›
