Book Description

March 25, 2000 Works of G. A. Henty
The book, The Dash for Khartoum, is the story of two English lads who accompany the expedition to rescue General Gordon from the besieged city of Khartoum. Here Mr. Henty has composed a story around an event which occurred during his lifetime, and of which he had significant personal knowledge as you will read in our special foreword by Mrs. Ann King.

Henty, Wolseley, and Gordon were contemporaries. Mr. Henty had been in the area twenty years prior to the event depicted in this story as a correspondent for the Standard. As an extra, PrestonSpeed Publications has included in this volume one of Mr. Henty's special despatches.

Date: 1885
Location: Africa, Sudan
Main Event: Rescue of General Gordon

4.0 out of 5 stars History made interesting, May 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dash for Khartoum : A Tale of the Nile Expedition. Also includes Camp life in Abyssinia (Works of G. A. Henty) (Library Binding)
My son has a passion for Ancient Egypt. As a homeschool mom I have tried to encourage this, however, I felt that he should understand that history did not come to a screeching halt in Egypt after the death of Tutankhamen. In reading this book we not only enjoyed a page turning adventure that we couldn't put down, we also opened up an entirely new line of study. My son even wrote mock news paper articles in the, "Language of the time," bearing the sad news of the defeat of the Gallant Gordon. This book was invaluable in our study.

1.0 out of 5 stars Expurgated edition, June 11, 2004
By A Customer
Reading this edition for scholarly research, I was disappointed to find on the last page that I had bought and read an expurgated and abridged edition.
