Grade 3-7. An interesting, informative look at the Junior Iditarod Sled Dog Race, in which mushers between the ages of 14 and 17 compete in a two-day version of the race. Ted Wood's Iditarod Dream (Walker, 1996) is a photo-essay about Dusty Whittemore, the 1995 Jr. Iditarod Race winner. Shahan focuses more on going step-by-step (or paw-by-paw) through the race itself with background information on the original serum race to Nome in 1925. Where the book really shines is in its superb full-color photography, stunning layouts, torn-page borders, and snowy endpapers. Visually, it's a masterpiece. Children will find the subject fascinating, and the presentation pleasing. Shahan discusses the race as she follows a group of young people and their dogs along the trail. Readers will learn where the mushers go, how fast they travel, what they take along, how they communicate with their dogs, how they care for them, when they sleep, and what problems they may encounter along the way. The photographs are fantastic to show what all is being described in this book. I found the material to be factual and presented in an interesting manner for an elementary student who wishes to write a report on sled dogs or sledogging as a sport. It would also be a good book to learn about sled dogs and their sport. I live in Alaska and follow sled dog activity. I have also written a children's book about a sled dog. The photographs set this book apart from all the others I am familiar with.
