This review is from: The Dastgah Concept in Persian Music (Cambridge Studies in Ethnomusicology) (Paperback)
The Dastgah Concept in Persian Music by Farhat covers a very important issue of Iranian Music which is its modal system and the relevant concepts relating to it. However, Iranian music has another important aspect which is not examined in this book, namely rhythm of Persian music. I think a combination of Farhat's book and the recently published book of Azadehfar entitled Rhythmic Structure in Iranian Music can provide a nearly complete picture of Persian music. Although we still need some more sources particularly on sociological aspects of Iranian music. Rhythmic structure in Iranian music

Actually it was a really wise decision by the Cambridge University Press to publish Hormoz Farhat's PhD thesis as a book. Now it's available everywhere for those who are interested in Eastern music and specially Persian classical music. Historical information in the book is also very useful. I just wish there was a CD alonside of the book :(

Dr. Farhat's UCLA PhD thesis, now published as a book, remains the best introduction to Persian music theory. Clear, consistent, and concise.
