5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners
One of my networking classes for IST required this book. I've read chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 12. I actually enjoy reading this textbook and look forward to reading more chapters. Other students in my class enjoy reading it too.

It goes into just enough details about the electronics behind the scene but nothing to extensive. It also provides a great overview...

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated to the point of being useless
This book contains some useful information, however, most of the information is horribly outdated. Goes too much into detail about obsolete technologies such as T1 lines and 56K modems. It's fine if they want to cover that for purposes of showing where technology has come from, but it does not go deep into more current technologies. If I wanted a book in networking...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners, February 17, 2002

One of my networking classes for IST required this book. I've read chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6, & 12. I actually enjoy reading this textbook and look forward to reading more chapters. Other students in my class enjoy reading it too.

It goes into just enough details about the electronics behind the scene but nothing to extensive. It also provides a great overview about networks, without over welling the reader with tedious facts. The book starts out about the OSI model and then walks the reader through each layer.

It is a great book and I would encourage any instructor seeking a textbook to test this one out, your students will be glad you did. *Also useful for someone interested in networking for the first time or someone who wants to see the whole picture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Integrating Technology and Management, October 5, 2003
I have been using this book for two years to teach a senior level management class how technology is used in today's business. As most of instructors would agree, it is sometimes (or always) difficult to draw management students' interest in technical issues. If you use this book, that wouldn't be a problem at all. Supporting the topics in the book by some case studies from contemporary business would even make your course indispensable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand, February 5, 2003

I used this book for an internet class so i ended up reading the entire book from chapter one to the end. It was a little boring at times, but it made it easy to understand the material and the diagrams were great. The only annoying thing was how in the first few chapters it kept saying what was beyond the scope of the book and what chapter you will be studying what and when. Stick to the material.

This book contains some useful information, however, most of the information is horribly outdated. Goes too much into detail about obsolete technologies such as T1 lines and 56K modems. It's fine if they want to cover that for purposes of showing where technology has come from, but it does not go deep into more current technologies. If I wanted a book in networking history, I would have bought one. The latest edition is copyright 2009, but you wouldn't know it from reading the text.

Unfortunately this book is required at my class at DePaul University, so I have no choice but to read and learn about outdated information. If you can avoid a class that assigns this book, I would highly recommend doing that.

I see other reviews of this book are mostly positive, but I cannot see why.

2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated, December 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought the most recent version, updated in 2011, but the book included many instances in which the book had not been updated. For example, it refers to the year 2005 in future tense at one point in the book. I found several other examples just like this one.

This book is required reading for a class in my graduate studies. I am really enjoying it because of how the book is broken up. Very straight forward and easy to comprehend the information presented. Would highly recommend.

This review is from: Data Communications and Computer Networks: A Business User's Approach (Hardcover)
This book laid out as much information as possible without cluttering the pages with filler. There were several real-world examples, and the helpful diagrams really put the words into action. Now, there's any humor in this book, so don't expect to be entertained. And there's a lot of information in this book. I mean a lot. But if you actually want to learn something about networking and data communications, you won't be disappointed.
