By 2020, the Big Data revolution will be over; instead, there will be companies that have actively embraced data analytics as a core business process, and there will be those companies that have elected to go out of business, according to Christopher Surdak in this book.

According to the author, there are six major trends which are driving the growth and significance of online data for both individuals and organisations:

• Mobility, as we are increasingly connected by mobile devices including phones and tablets
• Virtual living, as our relationships are increasingly occurring through the Internet
• Digital commerce, as we are increasingly acquiring goods and services online
• Online entertainment, as the Internet is supplying an increasing proportion of our entertainment
• Cloud computing, which is making all of our information digitally accessible; and
• “Big Data”, which is primarily being created by our online activities

The key question for businesses is how to find valuable business insights by sifting through the Big Data.

It is fairly easy for even a casual observer to notice the increasingly rapid changes taking place in our businesses and our lives. The ways we connect with each other, gather information, shop, and plan our lives have and continue to evolve at a rapid pace. All these activities are creating massive amounts of data that companies must learn how to interpret and act on if they wish to remain competitive in the near future.

Christopher Surdak, author of Data Crush, has written a highly informative account of the market forces driving all this data, the strategies that companies must adopt to be able to respond to these forces and the specific actions companies need to take in order to prepare for the future.

Mr. Surdak is an industry expert in collaboration, social media and big data. He writes from a position of knowledge and authority. His writing style is business conversational. The information is well organized and easy to understand. There are no concepts that the average reader would have trouble understanding. However, the book is targeted to individuals and companies that are interested in understanding the trends in big data and how to prepare and profit from those trends.

There are six major trends driving the growth and significance of available consumer data. They are: Mobility; Virtual Living; Digital Commerce; Online Entertainment; Cloud Computing and Big Data.

The book is divided into three parts. Part one covers six market forces that business leaders must follow to be successful in the data driven world. They are: Make everything mobile; Digitize processes - drive out paper; Make business social; Automate information Governance; Mine big content and Commit to the cloud.

From the back cover... "The Internet used to be a tool for telling your customers about your business. Now its real value lies in what it tells you about them. Every move your customers make online can be tracked, catalogued, and analyzed to better understand their preferences and predict their future behavior. And with mobile technology like smartphones, customers are online almost every second of every day. The companies that succeed going forward will be those that learn to leverage this torrent of information—without being drowned by it."

If you are at all involved in technology today the paragraph above is very enticing. Who doesn't want to know how to succeed at leveraging information to connect better with your customers?

Mr. Surdak delivers the goods in "Data Crush". The book is very well organized and walks the reader through the process of understanding where all this "data" is coming from, how it will impact your business, and most importantly how to respond successfully.

I particularly love the "Chapter Summary" at the end of each short but concise chapter. Mr. Surdak writes in a very readable style that is engaging even on technical subject like big data.

If you are new to the concept of Big Data or a seasoned data scientist this book is worth the read.

It you want to get a picture of what the connected world will look like in 2020 Mr. Surdak includes a section in the back of the book that gives three scenarios of what the world of successful business engagement will look like. I really liked how he not only detailed a day in the life of the consumer, but how the technology "could" do it. It's very believable!
