Book Description

0849318157 978-0849318153 December 18, 1998 1
Focusing on a data-centric perspective, this book provides a complete overview of data mining: its uses, methods, current technologies, commercial products, and future challenges.

Three parts divide Data Mining:
  • Part I describes technologies for data mining - database systems, warehousing, machine learning, visualization, decision support, statistics, parallel processing, and architectural support for data mining
  • Part II presents tools and techniques - getting the data ready, carrying out the mining, pruning the results, evaluating outcomes, defining specific approaches, examining a specific technique based on logic programming, and citing literature and vendors for up-to-date information
  • Part III examines emerging trends - mining distributed and heterogeneous data sources; multimedia data, such as text, images, video; mining data on the World Wide Web; metadata aspects of mining; and privacy issues.

This self-contained book also contains two appendices providing exceptional information on technologies, such as data management, and artificial intelligence.

Is there a need for mining? Do you have the right tools? Do you have the people to do the work? Do you have sufficient funds allocated to the project? All these answers must be answered before embarking on a project. Data Mining provides singular guidance on appropriate applications for specific techniques as well as thoroughly assesses valuable product information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting to read, December 15, 2003
    By A Customer
This review is from: Data Mining: Technologies, Techniques, Tools, and Trends (Hardcover)
This is the second in a series of books by the author on data management and data mining for technical managers. While the book is written at a high level and aimed at managers, it gives a very interesting overview of data mining. The author has thought about some deep issues such as privacy back in 1998 when we are beginning to see debates emerge only within the past year. Author is a visionary and has very good insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elementary but very easy reading, June 14, 2003
This review is from: Data Mining: Technologies, Techniques, Tools, and Trends (Hardcover)
This book, while it may be outdated as its over 4 yrs old and so much has happened in data mining, is very easy to read and ideas well explained. I am not a computer scientist and found this book very interesting. I will recommend it to a beginner who wants to get a very broad overview of data mining.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Big Picture on Data Mining, March 12, 2001

This review is from: Data Mining: Technologies, Techniques, Tools, and Trends (Hardcover)
If any one ask me where can I can start, I will not hesitate to recommend this book.

If you ride with the author, you will find yourself effortlessly skim through all the important topics on data mining. In Part I, she tells you what the technologies are involved, In part II, she zooms through nearly all the important techniques and tools; however, it is not an encyclopedia type coverage. It gives you a good feel about the subject.

Finally in Part III, she presents the future trends, again she covers it all (somewhat over saying it). In summary, this book is a concise introduction, and overview of data mining area. It is an excellent book for novice, administrators, managers, in fact anyone who want to understand without the technical details.
