2.0 out of 5 stars Not much here for professionals, April 19, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Data Protection and Information Lifecycle Management (Paperback)
I am struggling to figure out who is an appropriate audience for this book. For the seasoned professional with 10+ years experience in IT, this book will contain very little new information about storage. For the entry level IT professionals new to storage, the book lacks the technical depth that this audience may demand. The high level nature of this book points to IT management as the intended audience.

However, for the IT management crows, this book lacks anything that may be useful. The last two chapters discuss Data Lifecycle Management and Information Lifecycle Management, and compares the two. Then it suddenly ends. There is no information on approaches for ILM, strategies to implement an ILM project, and sound advice on pitfalls to avoid. Nothing.

I would like to say "if you are x, you should buy this book" but I just cannot see where it adds any value. Despite the promising title of the book, and the lack of good books in the area of ILM, you should probably pass on this one. There is better information on the Internet for now. Save your money and wait for a better book to arrive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite disappointing, April 10, 2007

This review is from: Data Protection and Information Lifecycle Management (Paperback)
Found it to contain little general or useful information regarding the title topic. Spends far too much time discussing some current and ageing technologies in some detail but gives almost no strategic or even tactical advice.

The target audience appears to be people who have never given consideration to preserving their data and need a very basic tutorial in data protection and data storage technologies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Basics, July 12, 2006

This review is from: Data Protection and Information Lifecycle Management (Paperback)
This book offers the reader a good, solid, but basic understanding of storage, data, security vulnerabilities and information management. It is probably best for a reader who is new to storage security or who is in charge of implementing or purchasing storage and/or bcp/drm systems. There are case examples, which may help a reader to sell their ideas to management, or to think about how they might plan their network.

The first 4 chapters do an excellent job of explaining all the technology components of storage including standards (fibre channels, SCSI, etc). The security section was fair, with a good overview of the risks that any data administrator should know. It did not offer solutions, however, and I would have preferred to see some there. The remainder of the book on information lifecycle managment was basic info, also. Otherwise, this is a good book for reference, newbies, or a managers (and project managers) who have just been handed this as a task.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing review of data storage concepts, June 22, 2006

Information lifecycle management is an emerging concept, better helping companies ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data appropriately. I was excited that a new book had been published on the subject only to find it was mostly a rehash of storage concepts .. I found nothing new or of interest. Good title, but the content doesn't match what I was expecting.
