Book Description

September 1998
Fremont High School, Portland, Oregon, has just become the center of intense media attention--two of its teens have been murdered while "tagging" a school wall. Attention then shifts to what looks to become an epidemic of "tagger" murders as teen after teen is shot to death with a long-range rifle, usually in the dead of the night, while the boys are practicing their "art."

Stumped by these random acts of terror, the Portland police approach information specialist Tom Walkinshaw--alias Dataman--and ask him to work his computer magic to help them discover a pattern in the murders, and perhaps the name of the murderer.

Agreeing to get involved, even though he has several other active cases to unravel--a missing father; a computer blackmail scheme; a couple of county land statutes to plot--Walkinshaw soon realizes that he's become a target as his data programs lead him byte-by-byte to another computer wizard. And in this real-life game of computer cat-and-mouse, there can only be one winner--and the killer is determined that it won't be Dataman!

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Tom Walkinshaw sells information he gathers via state-of-the-art computer technology to solve problems for people. In this case, police ask for his help in solving the apparently random murders of two Hispanic kids caught spray-painting (or "tagging") a school. Other tagger murders follow, and Tom finds himself trying to outwit the killer on the Internet. Tom's more mundane cases, such as locating the missing and possibly child-abusing ex-husband of a wealthy woman, and Tom's affair with a young psychologist (who analyzes the killer's psyche) fill in the spaces. Mitcheltree is the author of Katie's Will (LJ 6/1/97). For larger collections.

More About the Author

I have eight titles published representing thirteen books in hard back and paperback. These titles include TERROR IN ROOM 201, KATY'S WILL, DATAMAN, KATY'S GOLD, MISSING, MAYBE DEAD, BLINK OF AN EYE, DEATH OF A CARPENTER, and the novelette, "Merry Little Christmas."
I've just posted CRIME OF THE HEART, the third Grant Reynolds book, on Kindle. In the near future I plan to add a re-release of TERROR IN 201 and DATAMAN, followed by a new book, GOLD! The character in GOLD! is important to the fifth Paul Fischer book, IN SEARCH OF A SAINT, to be released as a Kindle book in the near future along with the fourth Paul Fischer book ("Merry Little Christmas" rewritten into a full-length book, LOVED BY ALL AND DEAD.)
In the future a second Dataman book will be released along with several other manuscripts turned into e-books. And look forward to the first three Paul Fischer books and the first two Grant Reynolds books to be released as e-books by Amazon. In the meantime, those can be purchased as books from Intrigue Press or Amazon.
I'm still single (may have something to do with three ex-wives), have four children, and continue to teach writing for a community college.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique and compelling protagonist, August 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dataman (Hardcover)
Is it a man? Is it a plane? It's not Superman, but is it a superhero? He is DATAMAN, a seemingly ordinary person who has the extraordinary ability to obtain computer-driven answers for his client. His alter ego is Tom Walkinshow and he is known for his vast range of problem solving abilities. He can find missing persons, uncover fraud, and locate computer viruses all with the touch of his mouse.

Even the police can be counted on as a client for Tom. A serial killer is murdering taggers (public graffiti painters) and the law enforcement officials are completely lost as to his identity. The city is in a total uproar over this individual's harsh retaliation of taggers. While simultaneously working on this and two other cases, DATANAN still has time to fret over whether his current lover will betray him like his former spouse once did.

Tom Mitcheltree has a unique voice that imbues in his male protagonist, sensitivity rarely seen in a novel even as the hero tries to disguise it by acting tough and never giving up. This makes the character someone who women will care about and men will root for as he goes about his life. The author's sardonic wit and the smooth story line which includes easy understanding of information technology help turn the novel into a compelling experience for those who enjoy a laugh even when the action turns rough. Hopefully, this is the first of long running series starring a unique, zany and memorable hero.
