Conversions Plus can operate as a separate program or, more typically, as a file viewer and converter accessible from Explorer or My Computer. The main program offers a folder tree in the left pane and files in the right, and you can access all the commands from the menu bar or toolbar. Convert brings up a window of conversion types, while Launch opens the file in the associated program (if installed on your system). The second method is to open Explorer or My Computer, right-click on a filename, and select Conversions Plus from the context menu to access the program's features. Conversions Plus also replaces Windows' QuickView with its own file viewer.
I had no problems with conversions from older spreadsheets and word processing formats into newer ones, but converting from newer to older formats caused some predictable problems because of the additional features available in the newer programs. Graphics files converted flawlessly from one format to another. Furthermore, the program has a number of Macintosh conversion features (it started life as a Mac product), and these are highly useful to any user with both PC and Mac.
There are, however, some negatives. For example, the program insists that .htm is an incorrect file extension; by now, .htm is certainly a de facto variant on .html, so calling it incorrect does nothing for the program's credibility. In addition, the main program lacks right-click menus for files and folders, and doesn't allow even simple Explorer-like activities such as renaming files. WYSIWYG viewing of PDF files is unsupported, and the selection of database programs is limited (Access and FileMaker Pro are notably absent). Nor does it directly cover every program you might have owned in the past (WordPerfect before 5.1, WordStar before 6.0). The program will examine the file to discover its format, however, and offer compatible formats for viewing and converting.
These issues keep Conversions Plus 6.0 off the WinList -- but not by much. The program is worth having, and its ability to work directly with e-mail attachments adds to it attraction.

It Works!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Conversions Plus 6.0 (CD-ROM)
In a nutshell this is a program that works exactly like it says. I had several hundred files created with Clarisworks 2.0 word processing software. Conversion Plus converted them to Microsoft Word without a hitch. Everything was perserved: font, italics, spacing, it was all there. It saved me a few months worth of typing. Not a bad deal for $65.

One of the great programs!,

Remember XTree? It could do just about everything. Conversions Plus, though a different kind of program, is also one of the great programs ever written.Someone send you a graphic that's garbled? Or a WordPerfect file? Conversions Plus will bring them to light, easily, and (usually) perfectly. It's one of those programs that will have you saying "how could I have worked without this?"

Blue Screen of Death Alert,

This review is from: Conversions Plus 6.0 (CD-ROM)
Installation went smoothly, but upon trial use of MacOpener (I have old digicam files I wanted to access) my PC went into blue screen mode when I inserted the first Mac CD. After spending an hour I recovered and used XP's System Restore to return to normal. I immediately removed Conversions Plus from my HD. I wouldn't recommend Conversion's Plus unless you get an adrenalin rush from system failures. The DataViz site admits to conflicts with other software, but I don't have the time to uninstall and check all of my applications and drivers against an app that I needed for occasional use of one element. Opened software is unreturnable unless you wish a duplicate of the same, so I'll eat the cost and chalk it up to experience. I'll have to find another solution to my problem, as Conversions Plus is not the answer for me.
