Amusing . . . kind of,
By
This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Maybe the problem is that I didn't read this book without interruption. I was about half way into it when I decided to read another book I was desperate to get my hands on, and when I came back to this one I just couldn't find it as funny anymore. What had been rather amusing soon became absurd and tedious. In Date Me Baby One More Time, you've got Derek, one of the curse La Valle men who needs to find the Guardian of the Goblet of Eternal Youth and kill her, and you've got Justine, the Guardian, who has to kill Derek or else end up in the Chamber of Unspeakable Horrors. Justine and Derek are pretty cute, but it's the other characters who quickly got on my nerves. There's the Guardian's successor who is trapped as a dragon, has cybersex all day and has a serious addiction to carb free pretzels. There's Satan, yes Satan, which may seem kind of cool, but trust me, is not. He's written for laughs which aren't funny and no one takes him seriously. Dialogue like: 'My love pumpkin! I sense your distress! I come to rescue you!' speaks for itself and it's never a good sign when even an ex lover says such things as "Satan! Down! Stay!" as if he was a dog. Even worse than Satan is Satan Jr, and yes it's as ridiculous as it sounds. When the books is more focused on our hero and heroine it's pretty good, and worth reading. It's only toward the end that the secondary characters and the plot spin out of control. If you like your humor bordering on the absurd then Date Me Baby is for you. If not, then forget about this one.

Celibacy and Pretzels: A Tale of Sex,
By
This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Justine Bennett is a Guardian. She has been charged with protecting the Goblet of Eternal Youth known as Desdemona's Temptation (Mona for short). She has been doing this for some two-hundred years. During that time she has had to remain celibate due to Guardian rules. She lives with her appointed successor who was transformed into a dragon when she was appointed. Just when Justine is belaboring the dullness of her life, someone makes a play for the goblet (now disguised as a cappuccino maker). Also interested in the Goblet is Dereck LaValle. The men in his family are cursed to always die at the same age. His time and that of his twin is fast approaching. He believes that killing the Guardian and drinking from the Goblet will end the curse. Add Satan, Justine's dead mother, Satan's son and the Guardians Council and you have quite a twisted tale.
This is a book about sex. Justine has been unable to have sex for two-hundred years. Her successor is a dragon addicted to cybersex. For most of the book, every woman immediately thinks about sex whenever she meets a man (sounds like a man's dreams come true). There is no talk of love or romance until the last few pages (apparently love is the offspring of quenched lust). I found the plot quite interesting and sufficiently convoluted but I have to wonder at Dereck. At one point he learns that killing the Guardian and drinking from the Goblet will not end the curse. Yet for the rest of the book he still feels driven to have to kill the Guardian. Why? I don't know. It is one of two questions I have for the author. All in all this is a fun book but not one for those offended by excessive sex (even between different species). I look forward to the sequel. Check it out.

Like a Bad Round Robin,
By
This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was very, very silly. Terribly silly. Almost terrible. It reminds me of something that might result from an online round-robin with a bunch of giddy paranormal-romance authors. (readers of fan-fic will know what I mean.)
The basic plot: an almost-immortal chick who is guardian of the cup of immortality. A TDH (tall dark and handsome) who is under a curse and must kill Our Heroine to save his own skin. And the skin of all the males in his family. There are dead characters, Satan, Satan's Son, a dragon who likes cyber-sex, and carb-free pretzels. All wrapped up in a plot which was hashed over waaaay too many times (I don't want to kill you but I must but boy I lust after you let's have sex). If you're looking for the lightest bit of fluff to while away a plane ride (I was), this is ok. But again, you may find yourself wishing at the end that you'd passed this up (I did). (*)>

Fun and inventive paranormal romance,
This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. Justine and her friend Theresa (who has been turned into a camisole wearing dragon) are Guardians of the Goblet of Eternal Youth. The fun begins when a hottie named Derek needs to kill the Justine and drink from the goblet to break a generational curse on his family-- all the males die in funny freak accidents at the exact age of 31.
Derek and Justine are wild about eachother, and are torn up because to survive, they need to kill one another. There is a great cast of eccentric characters, the plot is fun and layered, and the dialog is hilarious. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, wild and hilarious read. The trick is to remember to not take it so seriously-- it was meant to be ridiculous. Oh, and the sex is hot.

It was a lightweight read. Even lacking a lot of indepth characterization the plot moved along quickly and didn't bog down.
Justine is the Guardian of Desdemona's Temptation. Mona for short. She's currently in the form of an expresso machine. Justine shares these duties with her friend Theresa. Theresa as been turned into a dragon. Justine laments on how boring her life is and how much she misses having sex. It seems the Guardian is not allowed to have sex. It comes down to be careful what you wish for. Justine foils an attempted theft of Mona, and instead of running to a new safe house, decides to stay put. Derek LeValle is trying to end a curse which causes all male members of his family to die on their 31st birthday. By reading his ancestor's journal he determines the only way to stop the curse is to behead the Guardian and steal Mona. When Derek and Justine come together, neither wants to kill the other. They work together to remove the curse and find a way around the no sex clause for the guardian.

This book is so funny and sexy!! "Pretzel King" Derek is H-O-T and makes a perfect match with their romantic tension and bantering with the guardian of the goblet of youth (an espresso maker who doesn't say much but is certainly "perky" - pun intended) Justine. Justine's roommate a sex-kitten currently in the form of a dragon (who relieves her, ahem, "tensions" by an addiction to cyber sex) is a scream. Ms. Rowe has a crazy and fabulous imagination and I laughed out loud a lot while I read this book. She's an author to watch, that's for sure. A nice change from vampire novels and highly entertaining on every page!!

A class by itself....,
By
This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Derek LaValle has less than one week to locate the Guardian of the Goblet of Youth and behead her or he'll die from the family curse. Of course, his family thinks he's insane and refuses to believe a curse exists despite the bizarre deaths of the LaValle men all at the exact age (one died after being impaled by a toothbrush!).
Justine Bennett is the Guardian and she's utterly bored. Her last boyfriend (a LaValle descendant) betrayed her and now her only friend is a former siren turned dragon named Theresa. Meanwhile, her mother's soul is in jeopardy as Satan wants her for his queen. Justine must defend the Goblet (named Mona and disguised as an expresso machine) or her mother will not be allowed into heaven; her only option appears to be killing Derek. How will Derek and Justine justify not killing one another? Who is behind the LaValle curse? Stephanie Rowe has written a bizarre and yet highly amusing paranormal romance. DATE ME, BABY, ONE MORE TIME has it all- dragons, curses, guardians, Satan, and various other unusual creatures. This book has numerous twists that keep the reader guessing as to how Rowe will manage to resolve each new dilemma. Every time it appears Rowe has developed a scenario that must result in the death of either Justine or Derek, she cleverly shows the reader the loophole that keeps them alive. DATE ME, BABY, ONE MORE TIME is in a class completely by itself. Rowe deftly combines zany comedy with a very complex paranormal world to create a novel that defies classification. Readers will laugh out loud at the numerous antics of the characters, particularly Satan Jr. DATE ME, BABY, ONE MORE TIME is the start of what appears to be a wonderful new series! Amazingly Creative Supernatural Chick Lit!,

This review is from: Date Me, Baby, One More Time (Immortally Sexy, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
There is nothing boring when it comes to a chick lit novel about an immortal guardian named Justine, whose sole purpose in life is to protect Mona, a Goblet of Eternal Youth(conveniently disguised as an espresso machine thanks to it's shape-shifting ability), while a man named Derek La Valle strives to break a dreaded curse that kills every man in the La Valle family when they turn 31, while Justine's deceased mother is being wooed by Satan (literally), and Justine's best friend and second in command (who happens to be an 11 foot dragon) meddles in her affairs and fights a strong cyber sex addiction.
There is never a dull moment in this novel! If you're a fan of supernatural chick lit, then Stephanie Rowe's loose series (beginning with the book Date Me Baby, One More Time) is a perfect fit for you! It's light and fun, and definitely creative in many ways. Sometimes you'll be reading it and thinking "My gosh, where does she come up with this stuff!?!", but thats all part of the fun. There are a few surprises, and a ton of imagination. The plot drags a teeny bit at times, but overall it's a very satisfying story. At the very least, it's different. It seems to me that most supernatural chick lit is either about witches or vampires, but this one takes the term supernatural to a whole new level by creating it's own mythology and paranormal beings! It's full of wit and humor, and you won't be disappointed. Bottom line, it's a fun easy read, and a great addition to fans of the chick lit genre! |
