Book Description

March 1, 1998
Finally, help has arrived for all the tongue-tied couples on first dates, from the love-struck guy who aches to tell the beautiful girl he's sitting across from how he feels but doesn't want to scare her off after the third date, to the single mom who's falling in love for the first time in years but can't find a good way to tell him she doesn't want more children. From the author of Be Your Own Dating Service comes a one-of-a-kind communication guide that coaches singles through every major conversation that they are likely to have, from the first "hello" to talks on You and Me, money, sex, children, marriage, straight through to ending a relationship or proceeding down the aisle to "I do." As the strong sales of her first book show, the dating crowd loves Nina Atwood's advice. Maybe that's because, unlike other authors, she does not encourage strategizing and the use of specific techniques to win over a desired partner. Instead, she focuses on the process of dating itself and teaches singles how to make this time of their lives fulfilling, whatever their long-term relationship goals may be. Upbeat and filled with practical suggestions, Date Lines empowers its readers to be their best possible true selves while practicing the skills needed for connection and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A author's second book better than the first!, January 12, 1999

This review is from: Date Lines: Communication from "Hello" to "I Do" and Everything in Between (Paperback)
How many times have you read some author's book #2, only to find that it is really a rewrite of book #1, with almost nothing new, and not even as well written.

Fortunately, there are exceptions. This book is one of them.

As Nina Atwood's second book, it expands on a critical component of her first book: communication.

It helps you to understand why communication is absolutely critical in a relationship, where all couples encounter communication speed-bumps, and, most importantly, how to overcome them.

Nina Atwood combines her professional training, personal experiences and the experiences of those with whom she has counseled, coached and corresponded.

Yes, she provides insight into the problems. And reading about other people offers reassurance that you aren't the only one having problems like that. But, then she goes on to offer concrete, achievable solutions.

Some books I've bought and read on topics like this seem so slanted to either the female or male perspective that I either wonder if they understand females enough for me to keep reading or I can't find anything useful for a male reader. This book is particularly balanced; I liked that.

If you've bought her first book, you should definitely buy this one. If you haven't bought her first book, you should definitely buy both.

I only wish I'd had them twenty years ago.

This review is from: Date Lines: Communication from "Hello" to "I Do" and Everything in Between (Paperback)
(review updated March 2005) I started reading this book in the Fall of 2002. Following the author's advice, I relaxed and started to have fun with the whole dating process. I went out and met a bunch of people, and started dating more. The tips I learned in this book had a lot to do with my happiness today. My communication is better, I'm more relaxed, and after reading it, I was able to enjoy dating instead of being nervous every time I met someone new. In talking to people, this book gave me a good handle on how to approach difficult topics, which takes a lot of the stress out of getting to know someone. In June 2003, I met an amazing man, and I wasn't nervous or uneasy about getting to know him. Before I knew it, we went on vacation together. We got engaged after only 6 months of dating because we had such incredible communication. We are now married and expecting our first child. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take charge and enjoy their love life instead of waiting for Ms./Mr. Right to drop out of the sky.

This book helps you set the stage for not only a successful dating relationship, but a lifelong partnership with somebody. Nina Atwood explains how to have the tough conversations that will get you through the difficult times, leaving the rest of your time open for happy, loving relationships. It is one of the most common-sense, down-to-earth dating books I've ever read.
