Book Description

December 1998
Written for investors who have a high degree of Y2K problem awareness, but no real understanding, this book contains an intelligent, well-written and comprehensive discussion of why Y2K really is a crisis in the making - as well as, the investment opportunity of a lifetime. Date Rape 2000 offers high-end investors the kind of substantiated research and analysis of the key commercial sectors and government agencies needed to make the critical investment decisions -- both offensive and defensive - required to not only prepare for the new millennium, but profit from it as well. To that end, specific thinking and well-defined strategies are offered by author J. David Stewart, who has been recognized by Fortune, Barron's, Entrepreneur, Money, and others as a leading Year 2000 investment analyst since 1996. The book is also distinctive in that Kevin Schick -- the former Research Director of The Gartner Group, originator of the now-famous $600 billion Y2K cost estimate a! nd one of the first experts to testify before Congress on the year 2000 problem wrote its Foreword.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Ruff Times, Volume XXV, Issue 2, February 1, 1999 Date Rape 2000 by J. David Stewart -- a somewhat objectionable but intriguing title. More depth than my book on the details of Y2K because I devoted most of my book to dealing with the social implications and the fault lines in society. (Stewart) Devoted a lot more space to analyzing why it happened, what's happening, and why it will be serious, in considerable more detail. Stewart does a terrific job of explaining the complexities of the interface between computers, and how compliant computers which have to interface with non-compliant computers can be corrupted. This can bring down many compliant ones. The book addresses in detail the considerable problems of the healthcare sector. They are as "serious as a heart attack," says Stewart. He quotes Michael Paskavitz, President of the Healthcare Safety Institute of Beverly, Massachusetts, who believes the failure of medical-system computers throughout this country will cause 15,000 to 20,000 deaths. Stewart has an intriguing observation on the FDIC: "One reason the banking industry's woeful Y2K situation has gotten so little attention is that the FDIC has imposed a virtual 'gag order' on reporting compliance efforts. In July 1998, the FDIC completed its first onsite assessment of the Y2K readiness of all state non-member banks -- assigning ratings reflecting their compliance level. "However, in what was apparently an attempt to prevent out-right panic among customers of banks lagging begin in their compliance efforts, the FDIC banned the banks surveyed from disclosing their ratings -- either to the general public or to third parties such as financial-ratings agencies which issue fidelity bonds

(which guarantee banks 'fiduciary performance'). "Although there has been no widespread cry of outrage from the general public, some people involved in the Year 2000 conversion effort have expressed concern. As one Y2K expert said, 'I for one, would very much like to know if my bank is going to be ready or not. Unfortunately, the FDIC now prohibits the bank from giving me an honest answer.'" He has some unkind words for the nation's financial managers who have been "living almost as lavishly as they have been BS'ing the American investment public -- and far too long." Howard J. Ruff -- Publisher Comments

From the Publisher

Having read virtually everything written about Y2K (even before Y2K was a recognized acronym!), we honestly believe this book to be the most practical -- and potentially the most profitable -- document written on the millennium crisis to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best single source for Y2K information., April 5, 1999
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read and studied many aspects of the Y2K computer date problem from many sources and find this book to be the most comprehensive. It not only describes how the problem started, but how it will probably affect all of us world wide in many ways.

It is not a doomsday prophesy, but rather a complete guide of where and how computers affect us and what we might expect to happen when the millennium rolls over. It suggests senseable things we can and should do to be prepared in the event there are disruptions. There are even suggestions as to how you might profit with investments, in spite of Y2K problems.

All in all it is well written and interesting to read. The type of book that once you start, it is hard to put down and once having read it, one of the few you will want to read again. I know of many who have read this book and all share my opinion. It is must reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stewart's Y2K piece is informative and brilliantly written., September 3, 1999

This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
J. David Stewart's new book, Date Rape 2000, is a provocative, mind boggling treatise on the Year 2000. According to Stewart, Y2K is not a bug but rather a ticking time bomb -- a nuclear bomb if you will. Expanding on the chaos that is likely to occur from this horrific glitch, Stewart outlines what you can do to minimize and even capitalize on the impeding millenium bombshell.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Everyone, not just investors, March 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
I read "Date Rape 2000: Investing in the crime of the Century" with a good of interest but with an equal amount of caution. As a computer programmer in the very early '60s (SPS Autocoder not COBOL), I am well aware of the "tricks" programmers used in those days of limited core memory and very costly disk space. As a practical person, I was apprensive about someone crying "Wolf"

"Date Rape 2000" reports the problem, covering it well both in depth and breadth. It does so without the panic and as thoroughly as any report could, considering the complexity of the problem, and still be readable. It provides a good basic understanding of the problem, and it IS a problem. It provides a logical approach to being prepared for what is to come. Everyone, not just investors, should read and use the information provided in "Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century."

Many thanks to David Stewart for writing this timely and valuable report.
