Not at all impressed with this book. This is all about David Stewart trying to make it big but he falls short of that expectation. Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best single source for Y2K information., April 5, 1999
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read and studied many aspects of the Y2K computer date problem from many sources and find this book to be the most comprehensive. It not only describes how the problem started, but how it will probably affect all of us world wide in many ways.

It is not a doomsday prophesy, but rather a complete guide of where and how computers affect us and what we might expect to happen when the millennium rolls over. It suggests senseable things we can and should do to be prepared in the event there are disruptions. There are even suggestions as to how you might profit with investments, in spite of Y2K problems.

All in all it is well written and interesting to read. The type of book that once you start, it is hard to put down and once having read it, one of the few you will want to read again. I know of many who have read this book and all share my opinion. It is must reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stewart's Y2K piece is informative and brilliantly written., September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
J. David Stewart's new book, Date Rape 2000, is a provocative, mind boggling treatise on the Year 2000. According to Stewart, Y2K is not a bug but rather a ticking time bomb -- a nuclear bomb if you will. Expanding on the chaos that is likely to occur from this horrific glitch, Stewart outlines what you can do to minimize and even capitalize on the impeding millenium bombshell.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Everyone, not just investors, March 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
I read "Date Rape 2000: Investing in the crime of the Century" with a good of interest but with an equal amount of caution. As a computer programmer in the very early '60s (SPS Autocoder not COBOL), I am well aware of the "tricks" programmers used in those days of limited core memory and very costly disk space. As a practical person, I was apprensive about someone crying "Wolf"

"Date Rape 2000" reports the problem, covering it well both in depth and breadth. It does so without the panic and as thoroughly as any report could, considering the complexity of the problem, and still be readable. It provides a good basic understanding of the problem, and it IS a problem. It provides a logical approach to being prepared for what is to come. Everyone, not just investors, should read and use the information provided in "Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century."

Many thanks to David Stewart for writing this timely and valuable report.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best investment guide to Y2K I've read., March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the best investment guide to Y2K I've read. Excellent historical overview of the problem. Sound advice on preparing for, and even profiting from, the Y2K debacle.

Nothing about "televisions falling from the sky," like you might read in a newspaper article. Nothing about building concrete bunkers in Montana.

Covers many different industry problems you probably haven't thought of.

This is the kind of research the investigative journalists should be doing.

Highly recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars a good book on why we are where we are, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
I found that DR2000 explained the cause of the situation clearly, and had some interesting advice regarding what to do in case the Y2K situation in all its glory, occurs. The Y2K impact is an optimist vs pessamist situation. One also has to consider the accuracy of his recommendations over the past 2-3 years. Objectively speaking, if one got out at the right time, one could have made money. The long term approach has been less than profitable.

His view may be right, or it may not. I personally have switched my allocations to about 50-60 % cash/bonds and am starting to stockpile certain foodstuffs for a week or so in case disaster hits. I really think any Y2K hits will not be of long duration so be prepared, but hedge the betand be prepared to go either way without being greedy. Also take into account the market since the book was published. It may be time to lock some profits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Investment Advice in Exploiting the Y2K Problem, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
Book does an excellent job of explaining the risks/impacts due to this problem. I was particularly impressed with the investment advice to consider due to these risks. Recomendations of targeted Companies (i.e. ZITL, etc.) that will have opportunities for significant upside was very interesting, especially since many are currently trading at close to 52 week lows. If David is right, as he has been many times in the past, speculative investors in these investments will do well in '99-'00.

5.0 out of 5 stars clear,concise and factual presentation, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
David Stewart has spent a large part of his professional life over the past 3 years in researching and exploring in depth the implications of compliance v. non-compliance in connection with the Y2K problem. He has explored the impact of the problem in specific economic areas : transportation (deadly) banking (ANSWERS URE UNAVAILAGLE!) Health care, public and private utilities, agriculture, etc, etc. His analysis appears to be sound and well-reasoned. I believe and will be guided accordingly as my common sense dictates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enormous transfere of wealth to those who read it, March 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
Finally, someone explains not only the cause of Y2K,and why the delay in addressing the problem but specifically how each segment of the economy, govermnent, financial community and global business will be affected. Most important information you will come away with is there is no Bill Gates to the rescue, we will absolutely not be ready in time, we have all been sucked in by Wall Sreet, banking, governmet inaction, computer companies still selling equipment and software not Y2K comlpiant and shamefully by Congress who had "Impeachment Brain" rather than concentrating on the greatest potential disaster in history. The book is terrifying, but very profitable reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable review of Y2K and sound investment suggestions, March 5, 1999
By
This review is from: Date Rape 2000: Investing in the Crime of the Century (Mass Market Paperback)
Looking for a comprehensive, very readable review of Y2K with sound, practical advice for ways to preserve your assets? Look no further. Mr. Stewart was recognized by Wall Street back in March, 1996, when he revealed to the investment community the depth of Y2K. David guides you confidently through his book and pleasantly entertains you along the way. He has uncanny ability to sift through the techno-babble of Y2K and make you feel at ease and yet alarmed at the ramifications.

He provides practical advice to perplexing questions. As stated in his Stewart Report dated March, 1996, "For every problem, there is a corresponding opportunity. Given the enormity of the computer date-change problem, there will be an equally large investment opportunity." These opportunities are summarized in the later chapters but reading between the lines he offers hints about companies poised to benefit from Y2K. As they say, "there is gold in them thar hills," but you've got to dig deep for the real nuggets.

He raises a good question about who "they" are - the proverbial fixers of Y2K. Mainstream thinking is that "they" will fix Y2K. Not so, according to Mr. Stewart, in spite of the assurances we hear in the media, et al.

Overall, a thorough, intelligent review of Y2K, specific industries, how prepared/unprepared they are along with investment quidelines for those who are concerned about themselves and their families. A Strong Buy!
