People have been eating dates since ancient times. As an energy rich food, it has been a cultural staple for people of the Arab world for centuries. Writer Jo Parfitt, and food scientist, Sue Valentine, who both lived in the Middle East, have collaborated to publish a new edition of "Dates", a unique and useful cookbook. First published in 1995 and now in 2008, this small, attractive, 97 page book includes an index, luscious, color photographs, as well as an explanation of the cultural significance of dates and an in depth informational section on the positive nutritional value of this fruit.
The objective of these authors is to share easy and quick recipes using dates. The new edition also attempts to include recipes that address some of the problems in modern Western diets such as food allergies and other nutritional concerns. While the recipes use metric and imperial measures, the authors have included an easy to follow "Weights and Measures" conversion chart that makes the recipes easy to make wherever you live in the world. Dishes include "Beginnings" (appetizers), "Middles" (main courses), and "Ends" (desserts), as well as "Accompaniments" (side dishes to compliment meals), and "Treats" which include everything form Date Balls to Crunchy Date Bars and Date Gingerbread. Ms. Parfitt and Ms. Valentine take turns adding short, entertaining personal comments with each recipe, that are useful. This very special cookbook will not only inspire you to eat more dates but will encourage you to use them in more ways than you ever thought possible. A most unusual gem of a book that will entertain all who pick it up whether on the coffee table or in the kitchen!
