"Dating the Ethnic Man is a rare and timely guide that will help any woman on the journey of love with an ethnic man. It discusses all the major roadblocks on that route, including the challenging attitudes toward relationships, sex and gender that ethnic men often hold. Faizal Sahukhan, a respected and experienced therapist in the area of multicultural romance, sets out the solutions that will enhance your chances of avoiding the culture clash and building a satisfying relationship."

Dear Dr. Faizal,

Thank you for writing this wonderful book 'Dating the Ethnic Man', which is so relevant to thousands of people in multi-cultural romances in Canada and world-wide.

I needed closure to my relationship with E, a Tanzanian doctor; I was stuck not knowing why our relationship had ended so badly. I had thought since E & I were both intelligent professionals who shared a similar sense of humour and were deeply in-love, it was enough. However, E's African culture intervened.

In Dr. Sahukhan's book, discussing racist remarks that Othello suffered, reminded me of all the racism that E had endured, much of it because he was with me and because I wanted to bring him for a visit to Canada.

The example of Lisa & James, an African American teacher enlightened me greatly. Actually, I was stunned to learn that a teacher (a professional) might not feel equal to a Caucasian woman. On pg 118, 'James shared that marrying Lisa would be like rejecting his race', shocked me.

And on pg 86, 'Parental loyalty and the fear of disappointing his family are the main reasons the ethnic man often conceals and later reneges on his relationship with Caucasian women' totally rang true in our case.

Most importantly, I was able to let go of my pain because Dr. Faisal personally (via Skype) told me in our counseling sessions that it wasn't my fault and that I didn't do anything wrong in the relationship. I needed to hear this to move on.

Thank you,

Christina Synnott

..I'd have embarked on cross-cultural romance with my eyes opened.

Although the book is pitched to women, Western men dating non-Western women find themselves confronted with the same issues. I'd also guess if "ethnic" men read this book, some may feel upset about Sahukhan's revelations but, hopefully, begin some soul-searching.

Overall a brilliant and original work that spells out numerous hurdles faced by couples from different cultures with insight, courage, balance, wit and flair.
