Book Description

January 30, 2007
From the moment he sees his future wife across a smoke-filled college keg party, Michael Crider has a strong hunch that his single days are numbered. In between that moment of early understanding and his sweaty presence years later at the altar, however, Crider missteps, stalls, and resists like a true man's man. Remembering his evolution from swinging singleto linked for life, Crider chronicles the highs and lows of relationship progress: from the nauseating dating days of "No, I love you more!" to his own embarrassing version of "Meet the Parents"; from plotting his marriage proposal to the wedding and reception itself (a.k.a. "booze, the bride, and blue balls"). For men under pressure to propose or newly affianced, newlywed or veteran to the husband hustle, Michael Crider's flawed attempts at both grand romantic gestures and small attempts to control his fate will be all too familiar. Refreshingly honest and laugh-out-loud funny,The Slow and Inevitable Crawl Toward Happily Ever After should also appeal to the long-suffering women in their lives who, for better or worse, recognize their men in its pages.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Crider has no trouble tackling difficult questions. In this prequel to The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the First Year of Fatherhood, he dissects his own relationship with his wife—from first hello at a college frat party, through humiliation and embarrassment—on the long road to marriage. With such chapter headings as "Open Mouth, Insert Foot," "Pop Goes the Question" and "Booze, the Bride and Blue Balls," the book is comical and witty, and offers honest advice (and even the occasional anecdote about masturbating astronauts) to the hapless, love-lost guy in every man. 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious!, September 24, 2009

This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Dating, Getting Hitched, and Surviving the First Year of Marriage (Paperback)
This book, along with ALL other books written by Michael Crider, is just hysterical. It had me laughing out loud the whole time. I had to go back and read it again when I was done.. it's just TOO funny. It's not all humor though.. it actually does give you some good insight into the mind of a man and the way they think. Just really an overall GREAT book!

This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Dating, Getting Hitched, and Surviving the First Year of Marriage (Paperback)
What a refreshingly funny book! I bought this for my fiancee and I ended up reading it myself. Truly honest, funny and insightful. I know when we get pregnant I'll have to buy the other book!

2.0 out of 5 stars A semi-funny look at a familiar topic, November 8, 2007
This review is from: The Guy's Guide to Dating, Getting Hitched, and Surviving the First Year of Marriage (Paperback)
Crider tackles a topic that's been tackled by many others, who have done so to far better effect. (Thurber and White's "Is Sex Necessary?" comes to mind.) This tome (originally titled "The Slow and Inevitable Crawl Toward Happily Ever After") is, alas, not in the same ballpark with Thurber, much less Greene, Erma Bombeck, or lesser comedic lights. This is a so-so rehash of all the usual stuff, with Crider trotting out every cliche you can imagine, from the obsessive girlfriend to the knuckle dragging, beer sucking, clueless male. Every once in awhile he manages to wring a laugh out of this over-exploited topic, but not enough for my taste. You want funny relationship stuff? Read Dorothy Parker...read Cynthia Heimel...read Nora Ephron...hell, read Thurber! But don't read this.
