A Great Guide to Love and Dating,
By
This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Hardcover)
This book is one of the best I have read - whether secular or spiritual - on relationships and intimacy. Shmuley incorporates humor into topics that are intimate and touch the soul. For those who are believers, this book really helps to focus on the analogy between our relationship with God, and our relationship with our soulmate. The principles of primacy, exclusivity, confidence, sacred moments, grtitude, compliments, mystery, sincerity, trust and contentment are simple, but often neglected. His countering of the prevailing notion of finding a "partner" vs. a "soul-mate" is one of the most salient points in the book. As he points out, a marriage should be a union like no other, and finding someone who can be a companion spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically is a pursuit worthy of our focus, care and attention. One to keep by the bedside, and read in between dates!

Hilarious AND Informative!,

Mr. Boteach's book, The Dating Secrets of the 10 Commandments caught my eye at a bookstore. I sat for a full hour and read as much as possible...and I loved it! Not only is it well-written, with a narrative and personal touch that gives the reader a sort of relationship with the author, it's actually a helpful tool in improving your attitude on dating. Usually, I skip over the personal stories of authors in books about dating, and/or any other subject, yet I laughed aloud as I read Boteach's thoughts and viewpoints on finding a soul-mate, especially from the Jewish perspective. If you are Jewish, this book will be probably more enjoyable for you since you can really relate to what Boteach is saying about the relationship between being Jewish and having a social life. I recommend this book even if you aren't looking for a soulmate! It's entertaining, interesting, and enjoyable!

Something of value even for "non daters",

This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Hardcover)
I picked this book up only because of the odd juxtaposition of the two concepts in the title. It has many good tips for guiding you towards more fulfilling relationships in general, not just with your "date." It made me appreciate and see the commandments in a whole new way. I concur with the other reviewer that there is too much schtick in the book. I enjoyed the some of the humor, and it did make certain points hit home. However after a while it got repetetive and distracting. If you can ignore the irrelevant jokes, you can find some real gems of spiritual advice for guiding your life based on the big 10. I would especially recommend this book to a guy who is looking for a meaningful relationship with a woman, perhaps leading to marriage. This answers the question, "What do women want?"

Rabbi Boteach is both wise and funny That combination makes each of his books truly special -- and is why I stop everything to read them when they come out. For those who want to be enlightened and entertained, this is the book to read.

Down to Earth, Sensible and Long Overdue Advice,
This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Hardcover)
Rabbi Boteach combines sensible dating advice with good, old fashioned morals, something clearly lacking from other dating books on the market. If you are looking for a quick-fix, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want to find your soulmate, and are looking for a beautiful, caring and loving relationship, then Boteach's book is unsurpassed. I have recommended his book to all my friends who have not as yet found that special one. A must read.

Sound Advice from a Rabbi for any Denomination,

This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Paperback)
The Ten Commandments form the bedrock of western civilization in the legal system, moral codes, character development, and other rockbeds of society even in the most secular and atheist. Dating has become an industry and so many people become tired with it after endless parties and dinners that leave them still lacking connection. This is a book about respect for others and self and a much needed guidance in a world where people are commodities rather than souls. Beloved wisdom from the ages and the Old Testament's Prophet: Moses.

Secrets if the 10 Commandments,
This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Hardcover)
Although Boteach tends to create lengthy stories full of hyperbole, Boteach offers the best advice I've heard about what to look for in a soulmate. I've flipped through other dating books before and they are all about manipulation or charm. I really enjoyed learning Boteach's point of view. As a non-Jew, it has never occurred to me that the ten commandments could be applied to anything other than what they are in and of themselves. I feel that dating sermons are popular in churches because pastors want to teach the youth, who are often unsure of themselves. The advice I have have gotten growing up in church has not been helpful compared to this interpretation of dating. I bought this book based on past reviews and would recommend it to others.

Too much shtick,
By
This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Paperback)
The central (arguable) thesis of this book is that the Ten Commandments, as interpreted by the author, contain all you need to know about heterosexual dating, romance, and love relationships. Rabbi Boteach, young (as a kid he attended a friend's Star Wars theme bar mitzvah) rabbi and talk show denizen, argues his thesis with dedication and enthusiasm in ten chapters, but he spoils the mood far too often by joking around, often irrelevantly or quite tastelessly. He has a fondness for slapstick. It is as if a bright, tender-hearted Hasidic rabbi and your friend's smart-aleck thirteen-year old nephew had collaborated on this book. In one chapter per commandment, he cites specifics (why one shouldn't talk about one's 'ex' - see the second chapter, "Making Your Date Your One and Only"; what the Sabbath and a date ought to have in common; "Sacred Moments and Sacred Time," fourth chapter). He seems sincere in his wish to help people - single or married - find lasting married love. It's his delivery that interferes. Rabbi Boteach digresses, careening wildly, sometimes. He sometimes loses the thread. (Leonardo DiCaprio, Lorena Bobbett, Monica Lewinsky - are all here.) He is often flippant. A paragraph or two of sincere and thoughtful commentary will be zapped, really, by a silly, jokey reference. In an earnest discussion regarding (for example) "How to behave on a date," he digresses nearly compulsively, inserting a silly story (fictional) -involving cartoonish violence - about a date he once had with his now-wife. Sometimes it's difficult to know when he's kidding - until you've been 'had.' A disappointment, especially since there is much that is valuable here.

Tiresome,
By dasn0wman "dasn0wman" (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments (Paperback)
This book tries to connect the ten commandments to dating and is not too successful as the connection is very loose. This is one of those books that are way too long (about 300 pages), but mostly because it is repetitious and somewhat preachy annoying probably since it is written by a Rabbi. It is also very righteous, maybe too righteous (is that possible?) also because it is written by a religious person. It started out ok but grew very tiresome at the end that I cannot wait for it to finish. The grammar is bad, very bad. I give it a few stars though because it did had some good content that you can use for dates but having to filter those useful tidbits from 300 pages is no fun at all.
