This review is from: Daufuskie Island: 25th Anniversary Edition (Paperback)
This elegant, informative book not only captures the sights of and hints at sounds from this magical island, it also reveals the heart. Twenty-five years later on Daufuskie slave descendents still own vast tracts of land, the First Union African Baptist Church conducts worship each Sunday, Pat Conroy's famed Mary Fields School (from The Water is Wide) is an active host for regular community meetings, roaming chickens cluck alongside goats, and dozens of original Gullah cottages remain (some with haint blue trim to scare away spirits). If you can't personally come to enjoy Daufuskie's acapella gospel, award winning Gullah Learning Center, Billie Burn Museum, or Sallie Ann Robinson cooking, the photography in this book will transport you.
