The brainchild of singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal was among the second wave of bands to emerge from the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. A native of Athens, Georgia, Barnes was inspired to form the euphoric indie pop group in the wake of a broken romance with a woman from Montreal. He signed with Bar/None Records while living in Florida, subsequently moved to Cleveland and ... Read more in Amazon's of Montreal Store

As great as individual songs may be, the Of Montreal listening experience tends to center around the album in its entirety. "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" is an amazing song, but as the centerpiece of "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?" the album, its effect is greater and thus becomes a more impactful tune. The continuity of recent albums such as "Hissing", "Skeletal Lamping", and "Paralytic Stalks" amplified the brilliance of individual tracks by contrasting them with the songs that surrounded them. A Kevin Barnes album experience is not a haphazard affair.
That being said, it is impressive how well "Daughter of Cloud" works. A collection of unreleased tracks and CD single releases, the seventeen songs span the era from 2007's "Hissing Fauna" through 2012's "Paralytic Stalks", and while it is, at times, quite easy to match the song with the album they were originally intended for, the strength of the Kevin Barnes Artistic Aesthetic unites the disparate ideas into a satisfying yet eclectic whole.
Album opener "Our Love is Senile" seems to steal a couple riffs straight from "She's A Destroyer", which is a great starting point for any Of Montreal album. "Sails, Hermaphroditic" -> "Steppin Out" couples the convoluted progressive dance grooves of "Skeletal Lamping" with an eclectic psuedo-hip hop/rock 'n' roll vibe that would have worked perfectly on "thecontrollersphere". "Tender Fax" gives us one of those tender Barnes' moment (with a little Captain Beefheart flavor thrown in) that leads into "Psychotic Feeling", which is catchy, tuneful, pure pop gold. A cover of Buffalo Springfield's "Expecting to Fly" closes the album and while it does not stray too far from the original, it works perfectly as an album closer and as a Kevin Barnes Artistic Statement.
